The Name Beneath the Ashes

There are some stories that end. And there are others that simply disappear beneath the surface, waiting for the right moment to be remembered.

For a long time, she was known as Amber. Before that, she had been called Raven. Nightshade. Synin. Niamh. And once, long before the years of collars, cities, captivity and loss, she had been Karlotte.

Perhaps the strangest part of her story is that none of those names were entirely false. They were pieces of the same woman. She came from a world very different from Gor.

She was a physician and a researcher, educated in medicine and specializing in the manipulation of DNA. Her knowledge extended far beyond ordinary healing. Genetics, biological alteration, medicine and the mechanisms of the human body were the fields in which her mind had once been completely at home.

Then she was taken. Why she was abducted from Earth remains known only to a very small number of people. The journey ended violently. The ship of acquisition carrying her crashed near Laura, and the life as she knew it came to an end.

She became property. She was enslaved and eventually auctioned by Ari Blackthorne. From there, her story became one of movement, captivity and survival. She was sold to an Assassin. And then she was lost again. During the chaos that followed, she was taken from the docks of Port Kar by those she knew as the enemy.

After that point, the story becomes fragmented. And for years, even she herself could not tell anyone what happened. Eventually she found herself in the cold north. The winds there were brutal, but for the first time in a long time, she found something she had almost forgotten existed. Safety. She became the personal bond of the Overseer. And then something happened that would change the direction of her life once again. She saved a woman’s life.

For that act, she was freed. No longer a slave, she became his companion. Together they travelled through several northern cities before eventually settling in Holmesk. There, she under the name of Niamh built something she had not expected to ever have again.

A family. She became the mother of six children: Caspian. Sasha. Elodi. Lova. Oona. Hildingr.

For a time, she was not a prisoner. Not a fugitive. Not a name passed from one owner to another. She was a mother.
A physician. A woman with a life. And then she disappeared.

The Missing Years. Nobody truly knows what happened. Not the people who knew her. Not the people who searched for her. And eventually, not even to herself.

When she was found by the Assassin Vesper, the woman he encountered did not remember the life she had once lived. Her memories were broken. Some remained as fragments. Some had been buried so deeply that she could not reach them. And some seemed simply to have been removed from the story entirely. She did not know where she had been. She did not know why she had disappeared. She did not know what had happened between Holmesk and the moment she was found.

So she became someone else. Amber. A name given to a woman who was trying to exist without knowing exactly who she had once been.

Memory rarely returns the way people imagine. There is no sudden opening of a door and a complete history waiting behind it. It begins with something small. A word. A sound. A smell. A familiar movement. A pattern the mind recognizes before the conscious self understands why.

For Amber, the key was not a name. It was a phrase. “Begin with the first sequence.” To anyone else, the words meant nothing. To Amber, they belonged to another life. A life of laboratories. Research. Medicine. Patterns. Sequences.

The first response was confusion. Then came the headache. Then the images. White light. A laboratory.
Gloved hands. A woman’s handwriting. A name. Niamh. And suddenly Amber understood something terrifying. She had not simply forgotten who she was.

Someone — or something — had buried her past.

Remembering Holmesk. The memories did not return in order. They came like pieces of broken glass. Torvaldsberg.
Snow. The smell of cold air. A woman’s voice. A child’s hand. Then another. And another. Six children. Six faces.
Six names. Caspian. Sasha. Elodi. Lova. Oona. Hildingr. The memories came with emotion before they came with clarity.

Love, fear, pride, loss, motherhood. And then came the realization that hurt more than anything else. She remembered Holmesk. She remembered her children. She remembered the woman she had been. But there was still a great empty space. A wall inside her mind. Everything after a certain point simply…wasn’t there.

Amber was never a lie. That realization changed everything. Amber had not been a false identity. The things she had experienced as Amber were real. The people she had met were real. The bonds she had formed were real. The woman who had survived after her memories were taken from her was real.

But Amber had been living with only part of the story. And now another part was returning. Niamh was not replacing Amber. She was emerging from beneath her.

The physician was still there. The mother was still there. The survivor was still there. The woman who had learned to live after losing almost everything was still there.

Amber had simply carried Niamh through the years when Niamh could no longer carry herself. Eventually someone asked her the question. Not Who were you? Not What happened to you? Simply: “What is your name?”

For a long moment she said nothing. Her fingers tightened. Her eyes closed. And somewhere beneath all the names she had worn, something answered. Not Raven. Not Nightshade. Not Synin. Not Amber.A name that had been waiting in the darkness.

“Niamh.”

It did not feel like becoming someone new. It felt like coming home. What remains unknown. There is still a missing chapter. Niamh remembers Holmesk. She remembers her children. She remembers the woman she was before the disappearance. But the time between Holmesk and her rediscovery remains largely inaccessible.

There are no clear memories of those years. Only fragments. Dreams. Sensations. Occasional flashes that disappear before they can be understood. Perhaps the memories will return. Perhaps they will not. And perhaps there are people who know what happened who have remained silent all this time. That part of the story has not yet been written.

Niamh

Today, she carries all of her names.

Raven taught her survival.
Nightshade taught her caution.
Synin taught her to disappear.
Amber taught her how to live when she no longer knew who she was.

And Niamh reminds her who she had been before all of it began.

She is still a physician. Still a mother. Still a survivor. Still a woman shaped by every road she has walked. But now she knows that her story did not begin when she was found. And it did not end when her memory was lost. There is still a missing chapter. There are still questions without answers. There are still six names written somewhere in the deepest part of her heart. And perhaps, one day, the rest of the story will return. Until then, she walks forward under the name she remembers.

Niamh.

The Gods may demand that we follow their path, but only by our own will can we find our true destiny. And perhaps that was the truth hidden beneath all the names all along. She was never truly lost. She was simply waiting to remember herself.
