The Dead, the Living, and the Unspoken

[12:27:15] Crow (melchior.wardell) went about his business, content to move towards the city. Then he saw her. The physician. Alone. He regarded her for a moment before approaching, his expression settling into that familiar mixture of calm and faint amusement. “Well.” A pause. “Thinking of leaving?” His eyes briefly swept the street before returning to her. “I assume this is coincidence.” Another beat. “Though I’ve learned that coincidence tends to become considerably less convincing the longer I know people.”

[12:30:17] Gabbi Del-Moro (gabbisapphire): Gabbi had, in fact, been studying the wall. Somewhere along this stretch Brokk had met stone after being unceremoniously launched from the back of a sleen. Given his size, she expected the wall should have fared worse. But the search had been abandoned when a cluster of flowers caught her attention. She crouched near them, fingertips hovering over delicate petals as she considered their usefulness beyond simply looking pretty. Crow’s voice came from behind her. She stilled. Perhaps wandering alone near the docks, with her back to the ships, had not been among her more brilliant decisions. Gabbi rose slowly and turned, green eyes settling upon him. The robes she wore belonged unmistakably to his caste, while the gorget at her throat and jewels worked into her crown quietly proclaimed her own. “Leaving?” Her brow lifted. “Hardly. I have only just finished putting one enormous man back together. I haven’t the energy required to dramatically flee the city.” Her gaze flicked toward the ships before returning to him. “And coincidence?” A small smile appeared beneath the veil. “You approached me, Crow. If anyone needs to explain themselves, I believe it is you.” She glanced pointedly around the empty docks. “Though admittedly, I have made myself remarkably easy to hunt.”

[12:36:10] Crow (melchior.wardell) noticed Neeve approaching and, for a moment, simply watched the two Physicians gathering near the ship. His brow lifted slowly, a flicker of genuine amusement crossing his otherwise unreadable expression. He glanced from Neeve to Gabbi, then toward the city walls. “Don’t you ladies think the city within the walls is less dangerous than here?” His gaze returned to them, one eyebrow still raised. “Broken doors. Escaped beasts. Wounded tarns. Hungry larls…” A small pause. “And now two Physicians appearing at the docks.” His mouth twitched faintly. “Either Avarra has become considerably more dangerous…” He looked toward the city again. “…or the two of you have an unusual talent for finding where the trouble is.” There was a hint of humor.

[12:39:11] Neeve Barbosa (kristie.tigerpaw) was out for a nice walk, deciding to head down to the docks today with Miden, hoping to point out a few herbs that she could use in the infirmary, some of which only grew here. She was enjoying the fresh air and the quiet of the walk when she came across Gabbi and Crow at the bottom of the steps, causing her to slow and eventually come to a halt. She offered them both a warm smile before greeting them. “nice to see you both..” then she heard Crow’s words and she chuckled a little “I suppose when you put it that way, it does sound as though the docks are considerably more dangerous than the city,” she admitted with a quiet chuckle. “Though I wouldn’t say we have a talent for finding trouble. We are physicians, after all. Trouble tends to find us when there are wounded people and creatures in need of tending. As for two physicians appearing at the docks… perhaps we simply decided that we were allowed a peaceful walk for once, though judging by your list, I may have spoken too soon.” She gave him an amused look. “Broken doors, escaped beasts, wounded tarns and hungry larls? I think I’ll keep a particularly close eye on Miden today.”

[12:40:09] “Miden” padded gracefully after the Mistress, still acutely aware of the very little clothing she had on, even moreso after the educational session she just had earlier. Her wrists remained crossed at her back, head held high. That was until she caught sight of the man at the docks, and judging by the way he carried himself, the clothing he wore, she froze, summizing his caste and began to shake with terror, paling a little as her head lowered, swallowing hard. She remained silent, stopping just behind the woman and to her left, although she was more hiding behind her than not…

[12:41:45] Stones (stony2526): greetings all ..
[12:41:59] Stones (stony2526): did the stairs wear you all out ?

[12:43:55] Gabbi Del-Moro (gabbisapphire): Gabbi’s eyes narrowed slightly at Crow, though amusement still lingered behind them. “Easy to hunt, perhaps. Entirely without purpose? Hardly.” She gestured toward the wall. “Brokk came home today. Somewhere along here is where several hundred pounds of him met Avarran stone after a sleen decided he no longer belonged upon its back. I was curious which survived the encounter with greater dignity.” Her attention drifted back toward the flowers. “Then those distracted me. I was wondering whether they might be useful in the infirmary.” A pause. “So yes, coming down here alone was perhaps not the wisest decision I have made this hand.” Neeve’s arrival drew a warmer glance, though Gabbi’s brow soon lifted. “Interesting. I come looking for damaged walls and find herbs. You come looking for herb s and find me. Perhaps Crow has discovered a conspiracy after all.” Her gaze slipped beyond Neeve to Miden, catching the sudden pallor, trembling, and the rather determined attempt to disappear behind her Mistress. Gabbi knew that fear. More importantly, she knew what usually inspired it. Green eyes returned slowly to Crow. “Well,” she murmured dryly, “at least someone here possesses a healthy sense of self-preservation.” to the man that just arrived Gabbi gave a polite nod of her head as a silent greeting.

[12:44:58] Stones (stony2526): sets off up the interminable stairs to find the tavern
[12:45:02] Stones (stony2526): be well all

[12:46:12] Crow (melchior.wardell) ‘s eyes shifted toward Neeve as she spoke, the faint amusement remaining in his expression. “Peaceful walk.” He repeated the words as though testing their accuracy against the evidence already gathered around Avarra. His gaze then moved to Miden. The reaction was immediate. He noticed the way she froze, the lowered head, the tension in her posture and the attempt to place Neeve between herself and him. “I seem to have ruined someone’s peaceful walk already.” His attention returned to Miden, his voice calm and matter-of-fact. “Relax. If I intended to cause you trouble, hiding behind a Physician would be a remarkably poor strategy.” A beat passed. “Although behind that physician might not be all that bad in decision.” He turned to the man that spoke of the stairs. “No.” The corner of his mouth lifted. He listens to Gabbi and a brow rose “Several hundred pounds of Brokk versus a sleen. And you were disappointed enough by the outcome to come looking for flowers.” A faint twitch of amusement touched his mouth. “Physicians are an unusual people.”

[12:51:23] Neeve Barbosa (kristie.tigerpaw) felt Miden’s sudden movement behind her and glanced back, noticing the girl’s pale face and trembling posture. Without making a fuss about it, she reached back and gave Miden’s head a gentle, reassuring pat, her touch lingering for a moment before she turned her attention back towards the others. “I have yet to encounter any of these beasts on my walk to here that you speak of, save for a giani who I am sure is rather cute rather than potentially going to scratch my eyes out,, so I think you are quite safe for the moment.” She gave the girl another gentle pat before looking towards Crow with a small smile. “Besides, I brought her down here to learn about the herbs that grow near the docks, not to throw her into the path of a hungry larl.”

I then glanced towards Gabbi, then back to Crow with a faintly amused expression. “And perhaps Physicians are unusual, but I would argue that wandering around looking for flowers is considerably more sensible than deliberately going looking for trouble. Although, judging by what happened to Brokk, perhaps the trouble simply has a habit of finding us regardless.”

[12:53:37] “Miden” was being hit with a double whammy there. Trauma from what a man had done to her quite recently and that self preservation kicking in. Her fear was palpable, even with the attempted reassurance from the Assassin. It was only the leash and training that stopped her from bolting. She remained completely silent, still shaking away. That tension only grew as the other man came closer, then walked past her, her chest rising and falling faster.

The touch from Neeve grounded her though, enough that she remembered what was expected of her, her head quickly lifting, chin held at an angle just below proud and arrogant, falling instead on elegant and servile, with just a touch of the expected pride.

[12:57:53] Gabbi Del-Moro (gabbisapphire): Gabbi glanced back toward the wall, studying it once more with considerably less satisfaction than when she had arrived. Truthfully, she had expected carnage. Cracked stone. A Brokk-shaped impression, perhaps. Something worthy of the tale he had recounted from the infirmary cot. Instead, she gave the wall an almost offended look. “Rather disappointing, actually. After listening to Brokk explain his newest instructional course, How to Tame a Sleen, I expected considerably more damage.” Her fingers indicated the unimpressive evidence. “Apparently the wall won.” Crow’s assessment earned him a slow turn of her head. “Unusual?” There was a thoughtful little hum behind her veil. “Interesting. Erebus seemed equally surprised by this particular physician.” Her green eyes rested deliberately upon Crow. “I am beginning to wonder whether it is physicians who are unusual, or whether men of your caste simply have very narrow expectations of us.” Neeve’s defense brought a quiet laugh from her. “Precisely. We look for flowers. They look for trouble. Yet somehow we are the unusual ones.”

[13:00:46] Crow (melchior.wardell) listened to Neeve, his gaze briefly settling on Miden as the Physician reassured her. There was no mockery in his expression now, only the quiet assessment that came naturally to him. “A giani.”He glanced toward Neeve. “Then perhaps the docks have shown unusual restraint today.” His eyes drifted back toward the wall, then the flowers Gabbi had been examining. “Though I suppose that is the advantage of looking for herbs rather than trouble. One occasionally finds something useful.” A faint smirk appeared. His brow rose slightly at Gabbi’s words, his gaze moving once more toward the wall as though reconsidering the disappointing evidence of Brokk’s encounter. “How to Tame a Sleen.” He let the title hang in the air for a moment. “I suspect the first lesson was poorly understood.” His attention returned to Gabbi as she challenged his expectations. “Perhaps.” His gaze briefly shifted toward Neeve, then back to Gabbi. “Though I wouldn’t call Physicians unusual because they are Physicians.” A pause. “I call them unusual when they willingly walk toward things that most sensible people walk away from.” His eyes settled on her. “Which, if I recall correctly, includes damaged walls, strange herbs, wounded beasts… Assassins?”

[13:03:15] Hosokawa Kinsei – Vesper™ 細川金星 (razius) walked off the gangplank of the ship and onto the dock of Avarra. He pulled out his sword…a double katana kept sharp with his always available whetting stones….and then slid the katanas back into their sheaths. On his thigh was a trio of quivas. In various pockets on his belt he carried a bag of readily accessible sand, tharlarion oil, a fire starter, lock picking tools, and a small medical kit with a box containing a vial and needle given by a physician, coin, and some treasured mementos. And hanging off the side of his belt was his multi-bladed fan, a crossbow and bolts, several grapples attached well to various lengths of rope and a flask of water. On his fingers were covered with hook rings, Caste rings. and around his neck and along his arm various daggers. The helmet worn was an homage to his background and Caste. He caught the words of the Caste Master nearby and a feint smirk crossed his face. He moved closer and yet held his tongue.

[13:09:38] Neeve Barbosa (kristie.tigerpaw) noticed how Miden’s nerves seemed to increase even further as the man made his way up the steps, though she was pleased to see the girl’s posture settle into something more composed and servile. The small change brought a gentle smile to Neeve’s eyes beneath her veil, and she gave Miden another reassuring pat before turning her attention back to the others.

She listened to Gabbi’s account of Brokk’s unfortunate meeting with the wall, her brow furrowing slightly as she glanced towards the stone. “Well, surely the wall would win?” she asked innocently. “It is rather difficult to imagine even Brokk being stronger than an entire wall.” Her eyes showed a hint of amusement as she looked back to Gabbi, clearly finding the whole story rather entertaining despite herself.

Crow’s words about Physicians earned him a slightly raised brow. “I’ll have you know, I am quite a good shot when I need to be,” she replied, a faint smile touching her lips. “And why would we walk away from something wounded? It doesn’t matter what it is; if it is injured, then surely it needs help. Whether it has claws, teeth, wings… or happens to be an Assassin.” Her gaze flickered briefly towards Crow, the amusement still evident in her eyes.

Then she caught sight of the heavily armed man approaching from the ship, and her attention immediately shifted to Miden. With so much black and enough weapons to outfit a small army, Neeve suspected the poor girl had quite enough excitement for one walk. She moved calmly a little further down the steps, keeping herself between Miden and the newcomer as she gently guided the girl towards a quieter corner, giving her a little space to breathe without making a spectacle of her fear. “Come along, Miden. We can look at the herbs from here for the moment.” Her tone remained soft and reassuring, as though nothing at all was out of the ordinary.

[13:11:21] “Miden” was half beginning to wonder if she was the only one with sense in the group, her instincts telling her ro run but her training rooting her to the spot. And the leash of course. Then another assassin joined the gaggle and she tensed up more, her breath coming just below hyperventilating as she trembled even harder.

She at least kept her posture, even if she didn’t manage to keep her composure particularly well, tension written all throughout her body. Her eyes remained downcast, looking at the stone below and she remained as silent as the dead, save for that rapid breathing.

There was definite signs of relief as she was led a little further away from the pair, a quiet “Thank you, Mistress” heard, as she then pretended to peer at herbs, although her senses were acutely aware of the pair still.

[13:13:28] Gabbi Del-Moro (gabbisapphire): Gabbi’s expression went utterly still as Crow finished his inventory of things she apparently possessed too little sense to avoid. “I am a Physician, Crow. Running toward what everyone else has the good sense to flee from is rather inconveniently part of the profession.” Her green eyes held his without challenge, but equally without fear. “And your caste does not frighten me simply for existing. I respect what you are. There is a difference.” A faint lift of one brow. “Walking down to the docks hardly qualified as danger.” At least, it hadn’t until Avarra apparently began collecting Assassins. Her gaze shifted toward the newcomer and traveled, quite shamelessly, over the extraordinary assortment strapped, sheathed, hooked and hanging from seemingly every available portion of him. Katanas. Quivas. Daggers. Crossbow. Grapples. Rings. Even a bladed fan.
Gabbi blinked once. Then looked at Crow. “Is he here to kill someone or accessorize the women of Avarra? Because I believe he has brought enough for both.” Whatever amusement might have followed died when the breeze shifted off the docks. Gabbi stopped mid-breath. Her face contorted behind the veil as something truly vile assaulted her nose. One hand flew instinctively toward her mouth and she turned aside, swallowing hard against the sudden urge to retch. So much for dignity. “What the fuck died?” Her eyes watered as she stared toward the docks, physician’s curiosity already beginning to overcome her stomach. “And please do not tell me that is another damned sleen.”

[13:17:55] Crow (melchior.wardell) would dip his head towards Vesper when he felt the man approach. Slightly turning to have him somewhat included in this gathering. He watched Neeve guide Miden farther down the steps, his attention following the small movement without comment. The girl’s fear was obvious enough, and he had no interest in making it worse simply by standing there. Then Neeve’s words about wounded things earned a quiet look.”I suppose I should be flattered to have been included among the injured. As for being a good shot, I don’t doubt you. But there is a difference between being capable of shooting something and deciding that shooting it is the best solution.” His attention shifted toward Gabbi and back to Vesper, taking in the impressive collection of weapons Gabbi had just catalogued. The faintest smirk appeared. “As for him…” Crow looked at Vesper with that glint of Koskinen sarcasm.”He claims it’s all necessary. I have yet to determine whether that is true or simply an elaborate expression of poor packing discipline.” at the outburst of what died he arched a brow. “I fear due to my profession I hardly detect that kind of smell.” of course that was untrue.

[13:25:16] Hosokawa Kinsei – Vesper™ 細川金星 (razius)’s amber gaze moved slowly toward Gabbi as she conducted what appeared to be a remarkably thorough inventory of everything attached to his person. He said nothing at first. Then Crow offered his assessment of Vesper’s packing discipline. Vesper looked down. His eyes traveled deliberately over the paired katanas, the quivas, crossbow, daggers, grapples, bladed fan, hook rings and the various implements tucked into his belt. He appeared to give the matter serious consideration before looking back up at Gabbi. “No. I dressed lightly for the docks.” His gaze shifted toward Crow. “I left the excessive things aboard.” The faintest shift touched the corner of his mouth before his attention returned to Gabbi. “Though I admit, accessorizing the women of Avarra had not occurred to me. I shall consider diversifying.” Then the wind changed. Unlike Gabbi, Vesper gave no visible reaction to what it carried. His gaze simply moved past her toward the wreckage for a long, quiet moment, as though the answer to her question was both known and considerably less interesting to him than it was about to become to her. His eyes returned to Gabbi. “Not a sleen.” A beat passed. “Probably.” Another beat, “But then again, I have not come across the local warriors of Avarra yet so I dare not hazard a guess as to their toiletry discipline.”

[13:25:45] “Miden” blinked at the words from the physician, and then the smell caught her. Composure? Posture? What was that? She herself moved straight to the ledge, possibly tugging Neeve slightly as she doubled over, hands on the stone ledge and lost her breakfast into the garden, not that she’d had a whole lot. Rather violently at that. She hadn’t seen many dead people in her short life and she certainly hadn’t smelled them and it was about the most vile smell she’d ever smelt. And then the next wave hit, throwing up even more and carrying on it was just bile, the slave looking even more pale than she had before. She was definitely the paragon of kajirahood in that moment…

Throwing up was the last thing the slave had needed, given she was still recovering from malnourishment and wasn’t eating a whole heap as it was. She bolted down fluids, but seemed almost disinterested in food, her body having grown used to not having it. One never gets used to not having fluids though. That would tend to have her added to the stin

At least she managed to yak it into the garden?

[13:28:38] Lokeana Doe (aelita.biedermann): stinky*
[13:31:08] Neeve Barbosa (kristie.tigerpaw) gave Miden’s hand a reassuring squeeze as they moved further down the steps, allowing the girl a little more distance from the gathering. “There you are, just concentrate on the herbs for now,” she murmured, though her attention was soon drawn away as a foul stench began to drift across the water. Being closer to the docks than the others, Neeve caught it – possibly before the others – her nose wrinkling beneath her veil as she slowly turned her head towards the source.

She stepped nearer to the edge and peered across the water, trying to see past the wreckage and whatever remained hidden beyond it. Her expression changed almost immediately, and she let out a long, weary groan before waving one hand slowly in front of her face as though that might somehow make the smell disappear. “Oh dear…” she muttered, staring for another moment before looking back towards Miden.

Her gaze softened as she saw the girl bend over the ledge, and Neeve moved quickly to her side, one hand resting gently between her shoulders as she rubbed her back. “Easy, Miden. Just let it out. Don’t try to fight it.” She glanced briefly back towards the water, then grimaced beneath her veil. “Perhaps the girl should prep the infirmary? I’m not sure she has… seen this sight before.” There was a pause as another unpleasant waft reached them, and Neeve’s nose wrinkled again. “Actually, I think she may have seen quite enough for one day.” She gave Miden another gentle stroke between the shoulders, keeping her attention firmly on the girl rather than whatever horror lay beyond the water. “Go home Miden.” she said simply. She then detached the leash and let the girl run off – knowing that’s what she had wanted the moment their feet had touched the bottom steps and they saw the collection of people.

[13:33:49] Gabbi Del-Moro (gabbisapphire): Gabbi shot Crow a flat look. “How fortunate for you. I assure you, some of us have retained functioning noses despite our professions.” She had smelled death before. More times than she cared to count. Putrefaction ranked somewhere alongside burning flesh among odors the mind never quite forgot. Her eyes moved toward the wreckage offshore as understanding settled in. “The shipwreck.” Her humor faded. “There were dead among it.” What troubled her was the realization that followed. “Yet not a single body has come through the infirmary for examination or documentation.”
Her gaze sharpened toward the water. If they had been left exposed for days, that would certainly explain what the wind had just delivered. Vesper’s remark about Avarra’s Warriors pulled her attention back, and despite herself, one brow rose. “You haven’t encountered them because apparently neither have the rest of us.” She counted casually upon her fingers. “Kaiila. Sleen. Larl. Tarn. Four encounters, and I have yet to see a Warrior arrive before the excitement is over.” A pointed pause. “Come to think of it, our Commander has been equally elusive.” Her tone remained carefully diplomatic, though the criticism beneath it was unmistakable. “One would imagine escaped predators, injured citizens and a shipwreck containing the dead might eventually warrant his attention.”
Miden’s violent retching cut through whatever Gabbi might have added. She watched Neeve tend the girl, concern briefly overtaking irritation. When the leash came free and Miden was sent home, Gabbi made no attempt to stop her. “Probably wise.” Her gaze returned toward the wreckage, nose wrinkling as another foul breath of wind rolled in. Then, quieter, to Neeve, “We should find out why those bodies were never brought to us.”

[13:35:29] “Miden” finally stopped throwing up bile, although her stomach kept threatening to release more into the garden. The rubbing at her back definitely soothed her a little, and then the command to head home “Y-yes Mis-” she cut off as anothe retch hit her, but nothing came out “Yes, Mistress” with that she was padding back up the stairs, her arm pressed against her belly. If she could have, she would have definitely run, but she wasn’t up to that. A brisk walk was what she could manage, the girl not even bothering with posture in that moment ((sorry need to go lay down rl, so forgive the double post))

[13:36:09] حكيم Sheikh Jaziran عظيم (anvarra.alecto): “Probably because your skills are for the living not for a dead Neeve”chuckles as he wanders up from the docks

[13:37:33] Crow (melchior.wardell) gave a slow, almost imperceptible nod at Vesper’s assessment. His gaze moved across the city, lingering on the stairs nd the noticeably scarce presence of its Warriors. There were too few of them, and worse, too little evidence that they were actively watching. For a city such as Avarra, that was not merely an observation. It was a concern every citizen should eventually understand. His eyes shifted briefly toward the girl, catching her distress. He released her from his attention almost as quickly. There was nothing to be gained from watching someone suffer. The scent from the wreckage, however, barely disturbed him. He had known worse in his years as a tarnsman, and his work as an Assassin had taught him something else entirely: efficiency. Where others left chaos behind, He preferred his work clean, deliberate, and without unnecessary mess. His attention returned to Vesper for a moment. The bodies had been found days before if not a week. By now, they would undoubtedly be in a considerably worse state. But they were not Crow’s concern. They had not carried the names that had been paid for. A man crossed through the gathering, drawing his attention. His eyes traveled over him in a quick, practiced assessment, stance, clothing, hands, weapons, the way he carried himself. Nothing obvious escaped the habit of a man who had spent a lifetime learning to notice what others overlooked.

[13:43:18] beastofangels stepped further down, smiling at the Women who face i remembered from showing in”Tal Masters, Mistresses”slide down knees with leg closed

[13:43:27] Hosokawa Kinsei – Vesper™ 細川金星 (razius) watched the girl retreat up the stairs, his gaze following her only long enough to assure himself that she was no longer his concern before his gaze returned to Gabbi. The humor that had rested faintly upon his features diminished as she began listing the incidents. Kaiila. Sleen. Larl. Tarn. His eyes moved briefly toward Crow. That was no longer an amusing absence. It was a pattern. “Four?” he repeated quietly. His gaze traveled over the docks, the stairs, the approaches into the city, taking stock again of what was present and, perhaps more importantly, what was not. “Then either Avarra possesses remarkably well-behaved predators who have agreed to conduct their affairs around the Warriors’ schedules…” A small pause. “…or someone has mistaken absence for security.” The amber of his eyes shifted toward the wreckage when Gabbi spoke of the bodies. “The dead have been there for days.” There was no disgust in his voice, only observation. “If no one has examined them, then no one knows who they were, precisely how they died, what they carried, where they came from, or whether anything among that wreckage explains why they are dead.” His attention settled on Gabbi. “A corpse is considerably less interesting for being dead, Physician. It is not necessarily less informative.” The approaching man’s voice drew Vesper’s attention then, his eyes moving over him with much the same quiet assessment Crow had given. “And I would imagine a Physician knows better than most that determining why someone is dead can occasionally be useful to those still attempting to remain otherwise.” A glance passed toward Crow, brief but meaningful. Vesper had arrived only recently, but the information was accumulating quickly. “Kaiila. Sleen. Larl. Tarn. A shipwreck full of unexamined dead. No Warriors.” His fingers moved idly against one of the many weapons Gabbi had so diligently inventoried earlier. “Perhaps I should retrieve the excessive things.” He looked toward Gabbi and said, “Physician, while we deal in similar things in different states, do not look past the very shadows that may have a world of information at their fingertips….for the right price.” Vesper knew enough now to make the statement, especially when warriors were scarce if not absent. Information was part of what Assassins could provide.

[13:45:14] حكيم Sheikh Jaziran عظيم (anvarra.alecto): Well I am off to make sure the stalls are still safe and earning money

[13:47:21] Neeve Barbosa (kristie.tigerpaw) watched Miden disappear up the steps, her attention lingering on the girl for a moment before she turned back towards the wreckage. Gabbi’s quieter words had not escaped her, and the arrival of Vesper’s observations only seemed to confirm that the bodies had been left there far too long. She looked across the water, squinting slightly as she tried to make out what lay beyond the wreckage, before another foul gust of wind reached her.

Neeve groaned softly and immediately lifted a hand, waving it in front of her face. “Oh, that really is becoming rather unpleasant.” She glanced towards Gabbi, then back towards the wreckage. “We should go and collect them now, if you think you can handle the smell?” Her eyes then shifted towards the two Assassins, and a small, wicked smile appeared beneath her veil. “Though perhaps we should get them to help us. They seem remarkably nose-blind, so they can do the carrying while we do the examining.”

She listened to Vesper’s words, her expression becoming more thoughtful. “You are quite right, though. Being dead does not make someone uninteresting to a Physician. There may still be a great deal we can learn from them, particularly if no one has examined them yet.” Her gaze returned to the wreckage. “We should at least determine who they were and what happened to them. Leaving them out there certainly isn’t going to make the mystery any clearer.”

A faint smirk returned as she glanced towards Vesper and his impressive collection of weapons. “And if your excessive things are needed to retrieve them, I suppose you may bring those too. Though I confess, I was rather hoping today’s walk would involve nothing more dangerous than gathering herbs.” She looked towards Gabbi with a small shake of her head. “It seems we have somehow managed to turn flower collecting into corpse recovery.” She looked to the girl who had descended down the stairs and then to Sheikh who’d arrived in the middle of all this and she smiles to him first before greeting the girl “Tal there. “

[13:50:19] Gabbi Del-Moro (gabbisapphire): Gabbi squinted toward the water. From where they stood she could barely make out the wreckage, which presented the rather obvious problem Neeve’s enthusiasm had skipped over. “And precisely how are we getting over there?” Her gaze traveled along the docks, recalling the gate and whatever lay beyond it. “There is a gated area down here, if memory serves. I generally make it a habit not to wander through gates without explicit permission.” A dry glance found Neeve. “Rather like the tavern. Unless someone calls for a Physician, I have no business descending some mysterious staircase simply because curiosity suggests something interesting might be at the bottom.” She looked toward the wreck again. “The bodies absolutely should be examined. But I would prefer not to begin the examination by creating two additional corpses requiring retrieval.” The unknown man’s remark drew her attention. “My skills are for the living,” she agreed evenly, “but the dead frequently have something useful to say about what may threaten them.” Vesper’s offer of information earned a longer look. Gabbi understood his meaning perfectly well. “I do not underestimate the value of your caste’s eyes and ears.” Diplomacy softened the words without diminishing them. “Nor am I foolish enough to assume such information comes freely.” Another gust carried the stench toward them and her nose wrinkled. She looked between Neeve and the two remarkably unaffected Assassins. “Though I wholeheartedly support Neeve’s proposal that the gentlemen with defective noses be promoted to corpse retrieval.”

[13:51:48] beastofangels kept silent as the Free spoke, yet paying attention and taking faces in, being quit curious about all was told”Tal Mistress”said in soft sweet whisper, letting hands rest on knees while blowing away a strain of hair that tended to tickle my nose and almost made me sneeze

[13:52:04] حكيم Sheikh Jaziran عظيم (anvarra.alecto): leans over to tap a hand onto Neeve’s shoulder and smile before moving off to the money market and grumble about lousy crates of goods for stock”You should get some hands to gather the corpses and just burn em before flies and disease set upon em let alone beasts and wild things. And if you need burial herbs I can gather a few crates worth of mere ,sage, frankincense and sandalwood.”

[13:54:56] Crow (melchior.wardell) ‘s gaze shifted toward Neeve as she spoke, and for a moment the faintest hint of amusement touched his expression. “Remarkably nose-blind.” His eyes moved briefly toward Vesper. “That may be the kindest description I’ve heard.” He looked back toward the wreckage, the stench apparently doing little to change his composure. The suggestion of carrying the bodies earned a quiet exhale through his nose. “Very well.”His gaze returned to Neeve.”You examine. We carry.” He stepped closer to the stairs, studying the wreckage and the water beyond it. “So your peaceful herb walk has become corpse recovery.” He would turn to Vesper “Shall we humor them ?” he suggests as ever gallant.

[14:00:10] Hosokawa Kinsei – Vesper™ 細川金星 (razius)’s gaze settled upon Crow when he volunteered them both for the work. There was a long silence. Vesper looked toward the distant bodies, then back to Crow, as though attempting to determine whether his father had suffered some recent injury to the head. “We carry?” His eyes narrowed slightly. “I believe the Caste of Peasants has thralls for precisely the sort of career advancement you are proposing for us.” A pause. “I have spent considerable effort becoming qualified not to carry corpses I did not make.” The matter apparently settled in his mind, his attention returned to Gabbi. Her acknowledgment that information did not come freely earned the faintest inclination of his head. “Good. Then we understand one another.” He looked toward the wreckage. “You wish to know what happened to those men. We have already stood among them.” His gaze returned to her. “We examined the wreck before the bodies had spent quite so many days ripening in the Avarran sun. We saw the condition of the dead, what remained
aboard, what had been restrained there, what escaped, and where the evidence suggested it went.” He let that settle without elaborating. “You have just told us of a kaiila, a sleen, a larl and a tarn appearing within your city. That makes certain things we observed several days ago considerably more interesting than they were then.” His eyes shifted briefly toward Crow before returning to the Physician. “One silver for what I observed. One silver for what he observed. Two Killers, two sets of eyes, two silver. Between us, Physician, you may find that your examination has already begun…and the solution is also known by us.” A glance went toward the bodies again. “As for bringing your patients to you, employ a thrall. I deal professionally in creating the occasional corpse. Delivery is an entirely separate service.”

[14:06:53] Neeve Barbosa (kristie.tigerpaw) glanced between Gabbi and the wreckage beyond the water, then back towards the gated area with a thoughtful frown. “Well, we will need to open this said gate if we wish to explore how to get there, I think. Unless there is a small boat hidden somewhere that we can use to get from here to there…” She looked out over the water for a moment before giving a small shake of her head. “No, I really don’t fancy that either. I’ll take the dry route, thank you.” She gave Gabbi a small, amused smile. “And I agree, I would rather not add ourselves to the list of bodies needing to be examined.”

Neeve felt the gentle tap upon her shoulder and turned, momentarily taken aback by the unexpected gesture. There was something almost kind about it, and after a brief pause she gave the Sheikh a polite nod, though he was already making his way towards the money market before she could ask him to lend a hand with the bodies. “Thank you,” she murmured, watching him leave before turning back to the others. “I suppose that answers one question at least. We shall need to get the bodies somewhere safe before anything else gets to them.”

Neeve then listened carefully as Vesper explained that he and Crow had already examined the wreckage, her expression becoming more serious as she absorbed the information. “Now that is useful information,” she admitted, looking between the two Assassins. “If you have already seen the wreck and the condition of the bodies before they were left there to…” She paused, wrinkling her nose slightly as another foul breeze reached her. “…ripen, then I would certainly like to know what you discovered.”

She glanced towards Crow when he offered his services as a carrier, then towards Vesper as he rather firmly separated corpse-making from corpse-delivery. Upon hearing about the call for coin, She looked towards Gabbi. “If you wish to pay for their observations, perhaps we should make good use of what they know before we go opening gates and crossing water in search of answers.” Her gaze returned to the wreckage. “And once we know what we are dealing with, we can decide whether those bodies still need bringing back to the infirmary. Although either way, we need to stop the stink. So something or someone needs to go over there to do that at least.” She did not want to ignore the slave by her feet so leant down and whispered in her ear “Are you an infirmary girl at all? We might need some preparations done.”

[14:08:20] Gabbi Del-Moro (gabbisapphire): Gabbi’s head turned sharply toward Sheikh. “Thank you, Merchant, but I believe the Physicians can determine whether bodies require examination before you prescribe fire as their treatment.” Her tone was perfectly courteous. Almost. “Should we require incense afterward, I shall remember where to shop.” Then Vesper spoke. Whatever humor had occupied Gabbi’s features disappeared. “You were already there.” Her gaze moved between Vesper and Crow, stone cold now. “You stood among those bodies days ago. You knew they were there, knew beasts had escaped, examined what restrained them and followed evidence of where they went.” Her voice remained measured, which was usually when Gabbi was most angry. “Yet neither of you thought perhaps the Physicians should be informed that there were dead requiring documentation and burial, or living citizens about to share their streets with whatever escaped?” Then came the price. Two silver. Gabbi stared at Vesper for several Ihn before something almost resembling a smile touched beneath her veil. “No.” One small word. Entirely polite. “I respect your caste far too much to confuse valuable intelligence with information that should have been reported days ago.” Her head tilted. “And I suspect you are far too clever to believe I would pay you for withholding it until the consequences wandered through my infirmary.” Her eyes flicked toward Crow, then returned to Vesper. “Keep your two silver’s worth, Killer. I have corpses, wreckage, escaped animals and four separate encounters from which to draw conclusions. Physicians are remarkably good at diagnosis.” A beat. “And now I have learned something considerably more interesting than what lies aboard that ship.” Her brow lifted. “Who knew.”

[14:12:41] beastofangels gave a soft bite to my upper lip, showing a nervous twitch, hating myself if i felt like faling”No Mistress but i am eager to learn” my voice driven by the wind to Your ears as the conversation went on, which was very interesting. Shifting a bit on my knees, seeming to move closer to the Mistress

[14:14:02] Crow (melchior.wardell) regarded Vesper in silence for several heartbeats. The expression on his face remained perfectly composed, though there was a distinct glint of amusement in his eyes. “Creating corpses, apparently, falls within your professional qualifications.” His gaze drifted toward the bodies. “Carrying them does not.”A small nod followed, as though this distinction had now been properly recorded. “Noted.” He turned his attention back to Gabbi, the humor fading into something more focused as Vesper explained what they had already discovered. The wreck. The restraints. What had escaped. The trail. “He’s correct. That is no longer a collection of unfortunate accidents” His gaze returned to the wreckage. “Something was being transported.” Then, quieter: “Something got out.” He listened as Neeve considered the situation, his gaze moving briefly toward the gate and then back to the wreckage. Her reluctance to swim earned the faintest twitch of amusement. “Wise. Do not worry. I have the key to that gate.” he stated. His gaze settled on her. “Information first. Decisions afterward.” He looked toward Vesper for a moment, then back to the Physicians. His eyes moved to Gabbi as she spoke, and for several moments he said nothing. Her refusal was delivered without hostility, but there was enough steel beneath the words to make the point clear. He could respect that. “Fair. We could have made that distinction sooner.” There was no apology in the words, but neither was there defensiveness. Simply an acknowledgment. “Still I think these men were already dead and from what I know of dead bodies, they never get more dead than they already were.”

[14:17:36] Hosokawa Kinsei – Vesper™ 細川金星 (razius) tilted his head, he understood arrogance when he encountered it. He had that beaten out of him hundreds of years back. His head tilted in the other direction, his eyes never moving from Gabbi now. “Well, of course, you know best.” His voice was dry, without any form of tone to it. His Caste had multiple lessons that taught him what the purpose of the Black Caste was, mercy was not one of those lessons, in fact, the opposite was. He could have simply walked away. He thought of doing so. He held position for only one reason and that he kept to himself.

[14:25:53] Neeve Barbosa (kristie.tigerpaw) listened quietly as the exchange between Gabbi and the two Assassins unfolded, her attention settling on Crow when he admitted that they had known about the bodies for days. Her expression became noticeably more disappointed, and she shook her head slowly. “Crow… I must admit, I am rather disappointed to hear that you already knew about all of this.” Her voice remained calm, but there was a clear firmness beneath it. “I understand that they were already dead, and no, they cannot become any more dead than they already are, but that does not mean they should simply be left there.” Neeve took another glance towards the wreckage, her eyes narrowing slightly. “The dead still deserve some dignity. They deserve to be identified if that is possible, properly examined, and eventually given a decent burial rather than being left exposed to the elements and whatever creatures happen to find them.” She looked back towards Crow. “And if there was something being transported that escaped, then surely informing the Physicians would have been useful, even if only so we could be prepared for whatever might eventually turn up in our infirmary.”
She gave a small sigh, her gaze moving between Crow and Vesper. “I am not asking you to do a Physician’s work, nor am I suggesting you should have brought the bodies yourselves. But a simple word to someone responsible for the infirmary would have been enough.” Her expression softened slightly, though the disappointment remained. “We cannot tend to people or protect a city from what we do not know about.”
Neeve then glanced towards the girl as she edged a little closer, giving her a reassuring smile. “And you, girl, stay close. There is plenty to learn today, although perhaps not quite the lesson that perhaps one should start with.” She looked back towards the wreckage and gave another quiet sigh. “I think we have quite enough to investigate now.” She would then begin to wonder up the stairs hoping the rest would perhaps follow her.

[14:28:27] beastofangels returned the smile, rising with grace and starting to follow Her, giving all present a soft nod and wiggle of fingers “yes Mistress”

[14:29:54] Gabbi Del-Moro (gabbisapphire): Gabbi’s gaze remained on Vesper. His dry concession did not move her an inch. “Do not mistake refusal for ignorance, Killer.” Her voice was quiet. “I know enough of your caste to understand you owe Avarra neither mercy nor civic duty. You are not Warriors. You are certainly not corpse bearers, and unless one of those dead carried a name upon which coin was paid, I imagine their fate concerned you very little.”A slight tilt of her head. “But you offered information for a price. I declined it. That is commerce, not arrogance.” Her eyes held his. “If what you know is worth two silver to me, eventually I shall discover that. If it is not, I have saved two silver. Either way, threatening me with my own ignorance is unlikely to improve its value.” Then Crow mentioned the key. Gabbi looked toward the gate, then the barely visible wreckage beyond it. Suddenly the problem seemed considerably simpler. “We needn’t retrieve them at all.” Her physician’s mind had already shifted to logistics. “If they cannot reasonably be brought to the infirmary, we bring the infirmary to them. Instruments, gloves, linens, specimen jars, writing materials. We examine them where they lie.” Days beneath the Avarran sun would mean advanced decomposition. She grimaced. “There may not be much intact tissue left, but bones, wounds, clothing, bindings and whatever remains with them can still tell us something.” Her gaze found Neeve. “Afterward we build a pyre, assuming that is permitted. I will not have them simply thrown into the water and contaminate it further.” Then her attention returned to Vesper. “And if your observations prove something my examination cannot?”
The smallest smile touched beneath her veil. “Then perhaps your price will become considerably more persuasive.”

[14:34:29] Crow (melchior.wardell) listened to Neeve without interruption. He watched her for a moment as she spoke, taking in the disappointment behind her words rather than simply the words themselves. When she finished, he gave a slow nod. “You’re right.” There was no attempt to argue. No sarcasm this time. “The dead deserved better than to be left there. And the living deserved to know what had escaped.” His gaze moved briefly toward the wreckage. “We should have passed the information to the Physicians.” A quiet pause. “That was an oversight.” He watched Neeve begin to make her way up the steps, then glanced toward Vesper. His expression carried the faintest trace of dry resignation. “Apparently we have been properly diagnosed.” He looked once more toward the gate and the distant wreckage. “We know what we saw. Now they know enough to act on it.” His eyes followed Neeve for a moment before returning to the others. “That is probably the better outcome.” Then, with the faintest hint of his usual humor: “And I suspect the next time we discover something unpleasant, the Physicians will prefer a message before it begins walking into their infirmary.” The fact that he was not part of the Home Stone. Did not carry the obligations nor the privileges of it he left unsaid. He did not battle their tongues. “I am just surprised .. that none found them who surely must have been sent to search.” again that hint of what he believed was far more urgent than telling two assassins who had been there to protect – free of charge – no less while several citizens had been nearly attacked.

[14:41:20] Hosokawa Kinsei – Vesper™ 細川金星 (razius)’s gaze moved to Crow as he conceded the courtesy of notice but not the duty. When his father finished, Vesper gave a slight inclination of his head. “An oversight, perhaps. An obligation, no. We do not hold Avarra’s Home Stone, wear its scarlet or green, nor have we been retained by its officials. No contract was sealed and no coin crossed a palm. Yet we investigated when apparently those charged to do so did not.” His attention returned to Gabbi. “Courtesy freely given should not be confused with duty owed. But you are correct about one thing, Physician. You declined two silver because you believe you can acquire the information yourself. That is commerce.” He gestured faintly toward the wreckage. “Go. Examine your dead. Examine the wreckage. Draw your conclusions. I sincerely hope you find everything we found. If not, you are welcome to ask again.” The corner of his mouth shifted almost imperceptibly. “Only do not assume today’s price survives until tomorrow. Information does not possess a fixed value. Two silver was the price when you merely had questions. Certainty becomes considerably more expensive when consequences establish the urgency of the solution.” A beat. “But perhaps you will discover everything yourself. Think of the two silver you will have saved each time another patient enters your infirmary.”

[14:48:43] Gabbi Del-Moro (gabbisapphire): Gabbi looked at Crow, and somehow the expression she gave him was worse than anger. Her brows lifted slightly, lips pressed beneath the veil, disappointment written plainly across her features. “You should have told us.” Nothing more was needed. After a moment, her expression softened. “I know you owe Avarra nothing, Crow. Neither of you do. And considering the remarkable absence of those who do, I appreciate that your caste has been watching when apparently no one else was.” Her eyes narrowed faintly. “I simply prefer not learning about danger when it arrives bleeding through my infirmary door.” Then Vesper continued. Gabbi slowly turned toward him. “You do enjoy hearing yourself negotiate.” There was no heat in it. If anything, she appeared entertained now. “Today it is two silver. Tomorrow, perhaps four. Another patient arrives and suddenly I require a financing arrangement.” A tiny shrug followed. “Unfortunately for your business model, urgency does not make me more inclined to purchase certainty. It makes me more inclined to investigate.”She stepped toward the stairs, then paused. “And I have assumed nothing about your obligations. Quite the opposite. You investigated because you chose to. You withheld what you learned because you could. Now you offer to sell it because you may.” Her gaze settled steadily upon him. “All perfectly consistent with your caste.” A smile barely touched beneath her veil. “But if you intended to frighten a Physician into paying by reminding her that people may arrive wounded while she remains ignorant, you have misunderstood this particular Physician.” She glanced toward the wreck. “People arrive wounded. I treat them. People die. I learn from them. Information becomes expensive only when I cannot obtain it elsewhere.” Then back to Vesper. “So perhaps you should hope I don’t find everything you did. Otherwise tomorrow your information will not be worth four silver.”A beat passed.“…….It will be worth nothing.”

[14:53:10] Crow (melchior.wardell) remained where he was, listening to Gabbi’s final words without interruption. There was no offense in his expression. If anything, the Physician’s answer seemed to earn a quiet measure of respect. “Then we understand each other.” His gaze settled on her. “You don’t frighten easily. And you don’t purchase information simply because someone tells you it is valuable.” A faint, dry smile touched his mouth. His eyes moved briefly toward the wreckage. “But you are right about the important part.” A pause. “We could have told you.” Crow glanced toward Vesper, then back to Gabbi. “Not because Avarra is entitled to what we discover.” His voice remained calm. “Because people were living here. And whatever escaped that ship eventually became their problem.” He let the words settle. “As for the value of the information…” The faint smile returned. His eyes narrowed slightly toward the wreckage. “But if your investigation proves that what we found was incomplete, then perhaps the information wasn’t worth two silver after all. Perhaps it was worth more.” Crow turned his attention toward the city. “And that is usually how useful information works.” He looked back once toward Gabbi. “It becomes valuable when someone knows what to do with it.” He had dealt with women such as her way too often and way too long to truly be effected by it. Little did they seem to understand what they were. He wasn’t a knight in shiny armor or an cuddle assassin. He was a murderer and any information he gathered was his to sell. “I wish you well, lady.” he added as to indicate the conversation had ended.

[14:55:21] Hosokawa Kinsei – Vesper™ 細川金星 (razius) regarded her for several quiet ihn, his expression giving nothing away. There was no correction, no defense of his intentions, and certainly no further attempt to sell her anything. At last, the faintest suggestion of amusement touched his eyes for how much she had misunderstood everything about him, but he would not waste his breath in correcting her. “You know best, Physician…” A small inclination of his head. “…of course you do.”

[14:59:21] Gabbi Del-Moro (gabbisapphire): Gabbi held Crow’s gaze as he spoke, allowing him every word without interruption. There were reasons she regarded his caste with a respect neither man standing before her would ever fully understand. Old reasons. Family reasons. Reasons rooted in protection, blood and debts that had nothing to do with fear. But respect had never required Gabbi Del-Moro to become small. At his final dismissal, one brow lifted. “I believe we do understand one another.” Her voice remained measured. “I have never mistaken either of you for knights, guardsmen, or men obligated to protect this city. I know precisely what your caste is.” Her gaze moved briefly between them. “Perhaps that is why I can appreciate what you have done without pretending I must agree with everything you choose to do.” Then came the faintest smile beneath her veil. “And Crow? You may dismiss the conversation. You do not dismiss me.” No anger. No challenge. Simply fact. She inclined her head respectfully toward both men. “I wish you well, Killers.” Then Gabbi turned away first. There were bodies decomposing beyond a gate, an infirmary to prepare, and apparently an entire wreck investigation that had gone unattended. She had spent quite enough time debating the price of answers with men who already possessed them. She started up the stairs without looking back. If Vesper wished to discover whether his information would appreciate in value, he was welcome to wait. Gabbi intended to depreciate it herself.

[15:03:27] Hosokawa Kinsei – Vesper™ 細川金星 (razius) looked to Crow, “She still needs to get beyond that gate.” he said with a dry tone as the woman moved beyond ear shot. “May she have luck with that as well.” He knew full well that Crow and he had the keys and perhaps few others.

The things that leave a trail

Posted in Avarra, Black Caste on September 4, 2026 by crow1971

[06:00:17] Crow (melchior.wardell)’s rounds through Avarra had become almost habitual by now. He moved without hurry, his attention drifting naturally across the streets, faces, doors and the small details most people passed without a second glance. He slowed near Eva’s Perfume establishment. Something was wrong. His eyes settled first on the middle doorway or what remained of it. The door had been violently destroyed, glass scattered across the shop floor and the stairs outside. Splintered wooden beams lay in the street, while inside, one of the displays had been knocked over, its wares broken across the floor. He did not immediately enter. Instead, his eyes traveled over the damage with the detached precision of someone accustomed to examining scenes after something had happened. Broken glass. Torn wood. A fallen display. He looked at the frame of the doorway, studying the direction of the damage and searching for anything that might tell him how it had happened. “That wasn’t an accident.” His gaze moved slowly across the street. No weapon was drawn. No immediate threat presented itself. But he had learned long ago that a quiet street did not necessarily mean an empty one. He stepped closer, careful not to disturb the glass, and examined the splintered beams. “Someone wanted their way through.” His eyes shifted toward the interior of the perfume establishment. “And judging by the mess…” A faint narrowing of his eyes. “…they weren’t particularly concerned with being invited.”

[06:04:58] Crow (melchior.wardell)’s attention shifted as he noticed the details that had been hidden at first glance. The shattered door was one thing. The blood was another. He crouched near the edge of the steps without touching anything, his eyes following the faint trail inward. “Blood.” His gaze moved from the entrance toward the display. Something had entered wounded. Or had been wounded after entering. The damaged food display drew his attention next. A few treats had clearly been eaten, others crushed into the surface and carpet. The large dent in the display suggested considerable force, while the long damage across the carpet caught his attention more than the scattered food. “Something came through here.” His eyes followed the trail carefully as it continued out of the Book Nook and toward the neighboring perfume establishment. Crow slowly straightened. “From the Book Nook… into the perfume shop.” He looked back toward the shattered doorway, then down at the blood once more. The destruction was not random. There was a direction to it. A trail. And he had learned that trails were rarely accidental. He stepped toward the Book Nook, deliberately avoiding the blood and debris. “Now the question is whether it was looking for the food…” His gaze settled on the blood trail. “…or whether the food simply happened to be in its way.” A faint narrowing of his eyes. “Either way, something wounded is moving through Avarra.” He glanced toward the street, quietly checking the surroundings before following the evidence any further. “And I doubt it stopped at the next shop.” his thoughts back to the tarn of the other day.

[06:12:33] Zareen Barbosa (tinylulu) cries out, her body tilting backwards until she stumbles down a few steps. Her clothes, barely miss the large paw of the beast, train flailing in the wind but catching slightly on one claw. The thin fabrics tears, not so much as a tug allowing her to regain her footing as she falls, hands hitting the ground with a thud. Her eyes fly wide, breathing increasing with growing fear, as there was nothing around to assist her. Nothing to ensure a bit of hope that she could get out of this situation uninjured. She stays on the step, hands stinging from the blow of her fall, gaze never wavering from the larl. “Stay back,” she calls out, voice shaking from both being out of breath, and the adrenaline of her predicament

[06:14:44] Crow (melchior.wardell) stopped. Ahead, the sight of the black larl immediately changed the rhythm of his rounds. He knew better than most that appearances could be deceiving. A larl could be trained, handled, even trusted by someone who knew it well, but that did not make its teeth any less capable of ending a man. His eyes moved first to the beast, studying its posture, ears, tail and breathing. Then to Zareen standing before it. Was she controlling the animal? Was it accustomed to her presence? Or was she simply standing very close to something that had not yet decided what it wanted to do? He made no sudden movement. His hand remained well away from his weapons as he stopped at a respectful distance, his body turned slightly rather than presenting himself squarely to the larl. “Easy…” The word was directed toward the animal, quiet and even. His voice was calm, firm. His eyes never left the black larl. “Slowly. Stay where you are.” he called to Zareen. He watched the animal’s head, shoulders and paws, looking for the smallest indication of whether it was preparing to advance. A trained beast might respond to its handler. An untamed one might interpret sudden movement as an invitation. “Don’t make any sudden movements. Let me determine what we are dealing with before either of us makes a mistake.”

[06:17:40] нαzєℓ ßιαςкωợợd (jasmine.vandyke): The larl wasn’t in the least bit put off by the woman telling her to stay back. She lunged forward, about to attempt another vicious swipe when the game changed. Another human was there adn she’d abort her lung, hind legs slamming into the ground as she sat back on her haunches, circling around to appraise the situation, tail swishing wildly as she paced back and forth. The fact it was only attempting to use its paws and not its teeth was a clear sign the creature was being more playful than hungry…

[06:18:03] нαzєℓ ßιαςкωợợd (jasmine.vandyke): lunge*

[06:22:44] Zareen Barbosa (tinylulu) hears a voice, somewhere from behind her perhaps, but not once does she turn to face it. She sits, back straight, eying the creature with spinning thoughts. The train that had been torn, flutters to her side, landing softly on the ground beside her. “It’s a bit late for sudden movements,” she calls out, unsure if her voice would carry the distance. There was a throb to her hands, and she was sure that the skin of her palms would be scraped. Even still, she pushes up, rising once more to her feet on shaky legs. “Back,” she commands unsteadily. In all her years, she was not familiar with the ways or training of a larl, but she was familiar with the game of survival. “Stay back,” she repeats more fiercely, her own body stepping behind her to lower on the stairs

[06:26:33] Crow (melchior.wardell) watches the larl circle, his attention following the swishing tail and shifting weight rather than the teeth. The change in posture does not escape him. His shoulders ease by a fraction, though he makes no attempt to approach. His gaze flicks briefly toward Zareen before returning to the larl. “Don’t run. Whatever you do, don’t make yourself the more interesting target.” A faint, dry smile touches his mouth. “And perhaps someone should explain to your companion that greeting people with claws is considered poor manners.” Whoever said that Assassins had no sense of humor, clearly hadn’t met Crow. His eyes remained fixed on the larl as Zareen rises. Her command earns only the slightest tilt of his head. The animal’s attention remains on her, but its posture still lacks the commitment of a true attack. “You’re right,” he says quietly. “The sudden movement has already happened.” His gaze flicks briefly to her scraped hands before returning to the beast. “Don’t back away any faster. Let it decide that following you is less interesting than whatever else has caught its attention.” He shifts one measured step sideways, placing himself where the larl can see him without blocking its view of Zareen. “Easy…” he murmurs again, voice calm and even.

“So you are two.” he stated to the animal. He had left his home with enough weapons to either end or correct the animal. But he was very much aware that he was no match if the animal would simply leap their way.

[06:29:05] нαzєℓ ßιαςкωợợd (jasmine.vandyke): The larl lilted her head, an ancient memory triggered in it from when she had been a tamed best. A soft growl came, but she backed up, her eyes still pinned on the pair. Her demeanor changed slightly, both aggression and playfulness leaving her as she stilled, no longer pacing, no longer hunting.

She was still far from the tamed beast she used to be but it was apparent that it had been some time since she’d been under the command of a human, more than half wild now. It turned, keeping half an eye on them as it went to the top of the stairs and onto the small landing there, keeping a wary eye on the pair.

[06:34:42] Zareen Barbosa (tinylulu) turns her head then, looking for a long moment over her shoulder at the man dressed solely in black. Her eyes narrow slightly, though nothing of true anger behind their depths. “I can’t be anything but interesting. My presence isn’t one that can be dimmed,” she says slightly haughtily. Her head turns, and she brings her attention back to the beast once more. It retreats, further in the direction she was once going and she releases a breath of relief. “For the best,” she says, trembling hands brushing down the front of her dress. She turns, looking to the man more fully now and crossing her arms. “And what is someone such as you doing on this day?” she asks, clearing her throat as the fear dwindles from her veins. Every so often, her gaze shifts in the direction of where the larl once stood.

[06:37:01] Crow (melchior.wardell) studies the change carefully, watching the larl’s ears, the angle of its head, and the way it withdraws rather than advancing. The soft growl earns no reaction from him. He simply remains where he is, giving the beast the distance it has chosen. “Good,” he murmurs, almost to himself. His attention shifts briefly to Zareen. His mouth twitches faintly at her words, though whether it is amusement or simple acknowledgement is difficult to tell. His gaze follows hers toward the landing for another moment before returning to her. “I had noticed,” he says dryly. “You do seem to possess a certain talent for attracting attention.” He glances down at the black covering him, then back to her. “As for what I’m doing…” He pauses, considering how much of an answer she has actually earned. “Walking. Observing. Learning the city.” His eyes briefly travel toward the damaged shops and the direction in which the larl disappeared. “Today, apparently, that includes avoiding hungry beasts and investigating why one of them has decided Avarra is its dining hall.” He looks back to her, expression calm. “And you? Aside from commanding larls and making yourself impossible to overlook?”

[06:42:07] нαzєℓ ßιαςкωợợd (jasmine.vandyke): The larl saw nothing more that interested it in the pair, starting to slowly stalk off while keeping its ears flicked back to listen for any movement of an advance towards her, the large feline having all the grace that came with being exactly that. Its tail swished as it continued on its way, giving a hard shake of its head and a loud yawn. Thankfully for the woman, she had feasted on the supplies the inn, tavern and cafe had had to offer and ancient memories in training had resurfaced. it would appear the danger had passed for now.

[06:44:22] Zareen Barbosa (tinylulu) studies him, her gaze falling upon each aspect of him silently. There is no comment made, only a quiet appraisal of the man before she finally speaks. “Do you read?” she asks, never one to assume things about anyone. Again, she glances up the stone stairs, her breath bated in preparation to run if needed. “There have been many signs around the city that speak of the beasts…..I simply never expected to run into one…..call it naive hope for the safety of my well being.” She sighs, shoulders relaxing a bit more. “What is it that you have learned of the city? Beyond perhaps that there is danger lurking within its gardened walls.”

[06:47:42] Crow (melchior.wardell) watches the larl move away, noting the relaxed tail, the yawn, and the absence of any further interest in them. Only once the beast has put sufficient distance between them does he allow himself to focus more upon Zareen. “That,” he murmurs, “went considerably better than it might have.” He considers the question for a moment, his eyes briefly following hers toward the stairs before returning to her. “Do I read?” A faint hint of amusement touches his expression. “Yes. It is generally more useful than pretending to know things.” His gaze moves across the street, taking in the buildings, the people moving through them, the signs of recent disturbances. “As for what I’ve learned…” He was weighing his words. “Not enough yet to claim I understand Avarra.” he paused there once more. “The beasts are another matter. Signs of them were visible before I encountered one. That tells me the danger isn’t entirely unexpected. What interests me is how prepared the city actually is to deal with it. Signs tell you something is wrong. They don’t tell you who is responsible for fixing it.” His gaze returns to her, quietly curious. “Isn’t it irony, that a man that murders for his profession, sees to your safety while the warriors are no where to be found?”

[06:57:42] Zareen Barbosa (tinylulu) hums, fingers extending to their fullest length, deliberately avoiding her palms that still stung. “I must be inclined to agree with you,” she says looking down at the train of her dress. “I will take torn fabrics over an injury….or worse, the loss of my life. I should have known better than to leave home without my dagger, but I was in a rush. Foolish of me,” she mutters. “Avarra is beautiful in its own right. There is much to be studied and learned…..preferably without the presence of such animals destroying the beauty of it.” In her mind, an image of the poster floods her and she shrugs a bit. “Is it not the people of the city’s responsibility to deal with it. We each have a purpose, a role in which contributes to our society. The responsibility lies not on one person or caste….Although, for someone who murders for a profession, would it not be in your line of work to handle the beasts?” she asks, a small smile touching the corners of her lips beyond her veil. “I suppose I should thank you for your assistance. I am sure your presence helped scare off the larl.”

[07:02:21] Crow (melchior.wardell) gives a quiet huff of amusement at her final remark, his gaze settling on the torn fabric before returning to her. “Scare it off?” he says, almost thoughtfully. “I would prefer not to give myself that much credit.” he glances toward the direction the larl disappeared. “It had eaten. You were no longer particularly interesting to it. I merely happened to be standing there when it decided to leave.” He looks back to her, the faintest trace of dry humor in his voice. “As for your dagger… forgetting it once is foolish. Forgetting it twice would be a lesson. But I doubt it would have done you any good. The moment you were able to stab, the animal was already way to close.” He folds his arms loosely. “And no. Killing is part of my profession. That does not mean every creature that inconveniences a city becomes my target.” His expression grows slightly more serious. “Though I will admit… I’m becoming increasingly curious about where these beasts came from.” His eyes return to her. “And curiosity has a habit of becoming work.”

[07:09:02] Zareen Barbosa (tinylulu) purses her lips. “It is a good day when the killers are preoccupied with things beyond the murder of others.” She looks him over again and raises a brow. “You aren’t working now are you?” A pause. “Actually it is best if I do not know, but for one who is wanted by the warriors, you walk without much fear. Do you think yourself immune to being thrown into prison upon capture?” Subconsciously, she reaches for the empty space at her hip. “Foolish indeed,” she repeats softly, the words being carried only barely by the wind. “I will do well to remember.”

[07:11:48] Crow (melchior.wardell) regards her for a long moment, one brow lifting slightly at the question. His expression remains almost entirely unreadable. “Immune?” A quiet breath of amusement escapes him. “No.” His gaze briefly travels over the street. “Warriors have every right to arrest me if they believe they have cause. Whether they can keep me there is a separate question.” He adjusts his stance, relaxed rather than careless. “Fear has its uses. So does knowing when it is unnecessary.” A faint smirk touches his mouth. “And at this particular moment, I’m not working. If I were…”, looking at her pointedly, “…you would probably be better off not asking.” He lets the silence sit for a heartbeat before adding dryly: “Though I suppose you already arrived at that conclusion.”

[07:17:48] Zareen Barbosa (tinylulu) nods her head in agreement. “I am sure they would love to have one such as yourself stand on trial, but I am also sure that one such as yourself does not leave behind traces that would give them cause to do so,” she says with a slight laugh. It is short but there nonetheless. “I know a great many things. I am a physician’s apprentice, we see all. Perhaps more of your own kind as well even if we do not realize it. We work in tandem with you….in a way. You make more work for us.” Her eyes narrow again and she point at him. “I do love my work, but it is never a good day when I have to do it,” she says, wincing a bit when her fingers curl onto her scraped palm.

[07:20:17] Crow (melchior.wardell)’s eyes drop to her hand as her fingers curl against the scraped palm. For a moment, the amusement fades, replaced by the practical assessment of someone accustomed to noticing injuries. “Physician’s apprentice,” he repeats, looking back to her. “That explains the questions.” A faint smirk returns. “And perhaps explains why you seem entirely too comfortable discussing what my kind does.” His gaze settles once more on her injured hand. “As for making work for Physicians…” He pauses. “I suppose that depends on the Physician.” He gestures subtly toward her palm. “You’re making work for one right now.” His expression remains perfectly dry.

[07:25:13] Zareen Barbosa (tinylulu) huffs and lowers her hand. “One can only learn if one asks questions….I do not ask that many,” she adds, the words sounding almost petulant. “It is not my fault that beasts decided to take over the city. I was between losing my life or falling down the stairs….” She gestures to the space where they stand. “I chose the latter of course. A few scraps is much more manageable, and with the right salve, it’ll be healed before the day ends.”

[07:28:40] Crow (melchior.wardell) gives her a sidelong look, the faintest hint of amusement touching his expression at the petulant defense. “Of course not. You simply ask questions until people begin to suspect you’re collecting answers.” His gaze drops briefly to her palm again as she lowers it. “And you chose correctly. Stairs are considerably less troublesome than claws.Though I wouldn’t be quite so confident about being healed before the day ends. Salve can do much. It cannot make poor decisions disappear.” Suddenly his attention is taken once again. “Best to stay low, lady.” as he starts to advance to see where the tarn was heading.

[07:31:58] Tweet (voraciousbirb) had been circling above the Scribe’s hall for a while until he advanced for the stairs. His gaze swept the area, barely noticing the humans below, he was looking for something. A few droplets of blood fell down upon the steps before he flew back towards the Scribe’s hall and crashed down where a trail of blood led into the building.

The tarn straightened himself, that massive head lowered to rearrange the cut feathers and trying to pick at them to pull them out of the claw wound on his stomach. Blood still dripped down, landing on his feet and the ground beneath him.

[07:32:28] Crow (melchior.wardell)’s attention shifts abruptly upward, his eyes catching movement against the sky. For a moment he says nothing, simply tracking the tarn as it circles above the city. His expression changes almost imperceptibly. “I know that tarn.” He watches its flight, remembering the scarred bird from the wreckage and the broken cage yesterday. His gaze follows every turn, every correction of its wings. He watches it descend toward the Scribe’s Hall, then hears the faint patter of blood striking the stone. He moves toward the stairs, his attention fixed on the trail of blood rather than the massive bird itself. He stops several paces away, giving the tarn room, his eyes narrowing as he studies the trail. “Yesterday you were hunting.” His gaze shifts briefly toward the Scribe’s Hall, then back to the tarn. “Today you’re wounded.” He crouches slightly, examining the blood on the steps without reaching toward the bird. “And you’ve come here looking for something.” A quiet pause. Crow’s expression hardens with recognition. “Whatever you’re looking for, … it seems something found you first.”

[07:37:32] Tweet (voraciousbirb) let out another screech after the human spoke, his wings spread momentarily and he’d carry that massive body over to the the first door, nudging at the broken window with his beak. He couldnt fit in there, but something must have taken his attention. The tarn was out for revenge after his failure the day prior, however that furry four legged beast hid better within the buildings and he was too large to go snoop around.

[07:41:07] Crow (melchior.wardell) watches the tarn move toward the broken window, his eyes narrowing as the pieces begin to fit together. He doesn’t approach the tarn, instead following its attention toward the building. “So that’s what you’re after.” He would approach careful and slow. Hoping the animal understood that he meant no harm due to prior experiences. He was sure the animal remembered. They always did. He studies the tarn’s wound again. “You’re trying to get inside?” he asked wondering if the animal searched the Larl he had encounted a moment ago.

[07:44:40] Tweet (voraciousbirb) began to remove the glass shards poking out from the door frame, tossing them aside until nothing was there that may injure someone who decided to walk in. Sure, the human could have just opened the door but the tarn didnt think that far, he was hunting still and he wanted someone or something to go shoo out whatever may be inside, if, it was inside.

There was no sign of threat towards the two-legger, having remembered he pose no threat to him the day before and let him eat in peace. The feathered creature also recalled the other one who accompanied him too, but he was not present. Inside the building was blood on the wall, on the curtain and more trails leading through the Scribe’s hall.

[07:48:28] Crow (melchior.wardell) watches the tarn clear the remaining shards from the frame, his expression remaining unreadable. He had expected the animal to simply force its way through. Instead, it had removed the danger from the doorway. “Considerate,” he murmurs dryly. He steps closer to the now-cleared entrance, but pauses before coming to close. His eyes move over the blood on the wall, the curtain, and the trail disappearing deeper into the Scribe’s Hall. He looks back “You want me to go in there?” He studies the tarn’s wound again, then the blood trail. “You’re bleeding badly enough that following your quarry may leave you unable to finish what you started.” It wouldn’t be a first that he tended to a injured tarn. His own loyal companion was harmed more than once.

[07:52:45] Tweet (voraciousbirb) required help, so he tried to show the need of assistance. The tarn was not wild, he had a rider before yet during a war, the man was shot off the back of the black beast and the large bird tried to save him, which ended up with him diving into the water yet all hope was too late. Men retrieved the tarn and the body, burning the remains of the corpse and the tarn was not able to be handled due to grief. They had opted to bring the bird away, to find another place where he may forget what happened, so, the beast wasnt just wild and free, there was some training still in him.

With his head lowering, that beak scratched along the stone wall and he’d sit, as if waiting for something. Those yellow eyes fixated upon the human and he made no more anymore.

[07:56:37] Crow (melchior.wardell) watches the tarn settle, the movement of its massive body oddly deliberate. His eyes remain on those yellow eyes, studying the bird rather than the blood for a moment. There was something familiar in the posture now. Not obedience exactly. Expectation. His gaze shifts briefly toward the wound before returning to the tarn. He steps closer, but slowly, giving the bird every opportunity to object. “You remembered me from yesterday. You remembered I did not threaten you.” He glances toward the blood trail disappearing into the Scribe’s Hall. “And now you’ve brought me here.” He studies the bird’s face, then the injured feathers around its stomach. “You’re trained.” The realization comes with a slight narrowing of his eyes. “Not tame. Not anymore. But trained.” “Let’s see if you can trust a Black Caste Assassin long enough to let me look at that wound.” He extends one empty hand, palm visible, but does not yet touch the tarn.

[08:02:47] Tweet (voraciousbirb) ‘s head tilted a bit as the extended hand was offered, palm visible yet nothing in hand. He’d lower his head with that same tilt, casting his gaze up onto that hand and let it travel back to his face. The tarn didnt snap at him, he didnt even puff himself up, remaining there rather calmly even though he was hunting something and believed it could still be inside.

Any sound from within the Scribe’s Hall would have been noticed should something stir and move around, but it was completely silent.

His large feet shifted a bit, pushing themselves over the stone ground with the claws leaving faint marks, but he only did so to not rest the wound on his feet. He was hurt, it still phased him in a way.

[08:06:33] Crow (melchior.wardell) studies the tarn in silence, watching the small adjustments of its feet and the way it keeps the wounded side from resting. The bird is clearly hurting, but it remains calm. That matters more than the blood. He slowly lowers his extended hand, keeping it within sight rather than forcing the contact. “You’re hurting.” His eyes move over the wound again, assessing without touching. “And you’re trying very hard not to show it.” He glances toward the silent Scribe’s Hall, then back to the Tarn. Nothing stirs within. Whatever the tarn had been hunting was either gone or was very good at remaining still. “You brought me here because you need help with that wound.” he paused”And because you want me to look for whatever is hiding inside.” He takes one careful step closer, stopping well short of the bird. “Two problems. One solution.” His gaze remains fixed on the tarn. “Let me see the wound first. Then I’ll see what your quarry has left behind.” His voice was calm and his demeanor showed no fear, but simple understanding of what the animal could do. There was a natural kind of authority to him. One that had been taught from an early age. As a tarnsman he knew that his calmness was essential.

[08:11:49] Tweet (voraciousbirb) turned his head towards the broken door, as if watching it while the human got closer. He still showed no sign of threat but he did stand up again. Knowing how low he sat, the two legger would have to nearly crawl underneath him and if something dangerous was out there, the human would be in great danger since he’d have to come out from underneath and get up.

The wound on his belly bore deep claw marks of a larl, the tarn had ripped some feathers out to get to the wound that hurt him yet he couldnt heal himself, still, everything around it bothered him. Luckily, he had evaded alot of the attacks, so it was only one injury, but one was enough.

[08:15:01] Crow (melchior.wardell) watches as the tarn rises, immediately understanding the problem. Getting underneath the enormous bird would put him in a poor position, especially with whatever had wounded it potentially still somewhere inside the Hall. His eyes settle on the deep claw marks across the belly.”Larl.” The word is quiet, but certain. He studies the wound without reaching for it. The missing feathers tell him the animal has already tried to deal with the irritation itself. “You’ve done what you can. Pulling at the feathers may have made it worse.” His gaze shifts toward the broken doorway, then into the silent darkness beyond it. He doesn’t step underneath the tarn. Instead, he circles slightly, keeping both the bird and the entrance within his sight. “You’re right not to trust that doorway. Whatever hurt you may still be inside. And I’m not going to crawl beneath a wounded tarn just to find out. Come outside with me. Let me see the wound where I can actually reach it.” His tone remains calm, almost conversational. “Then we can decide whether your little hunt needs finishing.”

[08:19:30] Tweet (voraciousbirb) didnt quite understand what the human wanted, but when he stepped away, it irritated the bird to the point he’d call out, almost like he was complaining. One last gaze went through the broken door and he’d walk down the three steps. Unsure if the building was safe, his head turned back again to keep an eye on it.

The only reason the tarn had come here, was because he saw the trail of blood that led into the building, the blood inside was a give away for a potential attack too and considering he had met a kaiila that didnt seem to willy nilly attack people, a tiny sleen that could never do this much damage, this had to be the larl he fought against the day before.

[08:24:24] Crow (melchior.wardell) watches the tarn descend the steps, and the complaining call earns the faintest twitch at the corner of his mouth. “Yes. I heard you.” He follows at a measured pace, keeping himself to the side rather than directly in front of the tarn. His eyes move from the blood trail inside the Scribe’s Hall to the wound on its belly. “The blood brought you here.” He studies the marks on the stone and the torn feathers. “I think I met your ‘friend’ earlier.” he states as he glances back to where the tarn wanted to go. “I bet you on all your and my feathers it is a sleep. But let us not detain. We do not know how long it sleeps after it has toyed with womens dresses.” He now closed the distance as he moved with confidence. “You have shown me the wound. Now let me work without having to put my head underneath you.” His tone remains calm, almost dry. “After that, I’ll follow your trail inside.”

[08:30:27] Tweet (voraciousbirb) didnt take his eyes off of the building and the items inside. He was looking for movement, anything that may give away his enemy within the stone walls. The tarn remained unmoving, merely the faint breeze brushing through his feather coat. As the human moved, his head snapped forward briefly, watching him come closer and scanned the area for any other who may walk up, but no one was there. He turned his head again to observe the hall. Hunger caught him suddenly and the bird spread his wings, gazing back to the human again to nudge against the rim of his shield, as if telling him he would be back again before flying off.

Predators Know Predators

[06:30:50] Crow (melchior.wardell) slowed as the sight ahead caught his attention. A tarn stood where it perhaps should not have been, restless and agitated, its wings shifting with sharp, defensive movements. Something lay beneath and around it forms that, from this distance, looked disturbingly like bodies. Crow did not immediately approach. He stopped first, studying the animal rather than the apparent scene around it. The tarn’s posture. The movement of its wings. Its breathing. Whether it was frightened, wounded, guarding something, or simply reacting to the presence of people. His eyes then moved briefly over what lay beneath it, searching for movement, blood, weapons, clothing anything that might tell him whether these were truly dead bodies or merely appeared so from where he stood. “Easy…” His voice remained low and even.

[06:34:28] Hosokawa Kinsei – Vesper™ 細川金星 (razius) moved down to a crouch and pulled out the tarsk jerky from his pockets on his belt and tossed it through the gates. He was quiet, deathly silent. He watched through the open visor on his helm and noted the way the tarn moved. Vesper was also a predator of sorts and one predator knew and understood how other predators moved in the wild, with respect.

[06:37:14] Tweet (voraciousbirb) had spotted a small sleen and tried to chase it, but that morsel was fast and managed to slip away from him. The jet black tarn decided to fly off and soar within the skies, his wary gaze maintained downwards towards the shipwreck that had occurred not too long ago and the sight as scent of the crimson evidence soaked into the ground brought him to land with a heavy thud.
Large wings spread to intimidate any beast that may still be around but quickly noted he had been alone and lowered his massive head to clamp his beak into one of the torn off limbs of the crew that laid scattered and obviously dead – even dismembered. He’d toss the snack up and caught it, gobbling it down until his yellow gaze shot over towards the two two-leggers. His large posture puffed up, feathers ruffled to seem even larger then he already was. This was his meal and he was not going to share it with anyone. A loud screech of warning was given by the free Tarn.
Despite another, even smaller snack, being tossed through the gates,
he was more interested in the bodies near his claws.

[06:40:22] Crow (melchior.wardell) slowly lowered his posture, making himself less threatening, keeping his movements deliberate. He made no sudden attempt to reach for the tarn or whatever it was guarding. “Easy…. I am not here to take anything from you.” He remained at a careful distance, allowing the animal to see him rather than cornering it. His gaze never stopped assessing. A frightened tarn was dangerous. An injured tarn was worse. And a tarn guarding bodies was a problem he had no intention of making larger by rushing into it. “Do you see anything that might give away who it is he devours ?” He was sure enough that the animal wouldn’t give its prize by simple argument. “We can’t safe these victims but we might be able to inform them as to what has happened.” He was not truly shocked or pained in what he witnessed. He was a murderer too. A cleaner one, but just as vicious.

[06:48:03] Hosokawa Kinsei – Vesper™ 細川金星 (razius) watched the movements of the great bird, his head tilting to the side slowly. There was a way that Vesper moved that showed understanding for the animal, as if there was something that flowed in his veins that was like a great beast itself slouching toward the gate. He slowly moved up to stand and, while he listened to the Caste Master, his awareness moved past him and to the bird and what it guarded. He did not speak, not for a long while as his movements were slow and precise. His arms were held to his side. He did not puff up his own body, nor did he cower it. He watched, everything, carefully. Only when thousands of data points coalesced into reasoning would he whisper, “The bodies are waterlogged, note the way they are slightly swollen….little in the way of clothes. Could they have been rowers on a ship? What has the weather been like of late..many of them together, clumped.” He looked at the tarn. Eyes locking and then he slowly started to blink. Eyes opening and closing in a way that showed no threat was meant.

[06:51:25] Tweet (voraciousbirb) ‘s gaze flicked rapidly from one to the other yet seeing or at least, believing his intimidation was working and one had made itself smaller, he’d seem to calm down, the feathers smoothening more but that didnt mean he was relaxed. The tarn remained as sharp and wary as ever and ready to attack if it was needed. He still wouldnt share. They may be lucky to have some left overs if he lost interest in the bodies, then some of the corpses had no bite marks or even torn off limbs, they must have died by the sheer impact the ship had gone through, sending part of the crew flying against the stone edge of the stair’s wall and snapping necks, breaking backs and ribs to the point lungs were pierced. A few bodies didnt have the typical torn evidence of a tarn ripping limbs off, there were claw marks, bite marks, even an open torso where ribs were showing yet the organs and intestines within bitten into and halfway ripped out. He was not the only predator on the lose right now. He seemed to have lost interest in the one that had made himself smaller, but that intense stare slipped over to the other, standing there the same way as he came, without puffing up. His head began to twitch sideways, snapping left and right as if trying to read how the smaller individual blinked at him. He’d let out a short call with faint clicking of his beak before turning back to eat again. Plucking another hand from the ground that had been torn off and tossing it up to catch it and gobble it down again.

[06:54:28] Crow (melchior.wardell) remained still as Vesper joined him, his attention shifting briefly toward the other Assassin before returning to the tarn. He watched the slow blinking, the posture, the deliberate lack of threat. There was a familiarity in the way Vesper approached the creature that he recognized immediately. His eyes moved back toward the bodies. “That would make shipwreck more likely than a land killing. Especially if they came down together.” His gaze followed the scattered forms, studying their positions rather than the bodies themselves. He looked for anything that contradicted the first impression: ropes, remnants of a vessel, cargo, weapons, signs of impact. He glanced toward the great bird again. He had been a tarnsman before he was a man of the dreaded caste of Assassins. Once a warrior of Ar. “If she found them after they washed ashore, she may simply have claimed the place. But if she came with them…” He left the thought unfinished. He slowly lowered himself another fraction, keeping his hands visible and his movements measured. His voice became quieter. “Easy.” His eyes remained on the tarn’s. “We are only looking. No one is taking what is yours.” He allowed several heartbeats to pass before moving again, giving the animal the choice to accept his presence rather than forcing the matter. “You eat. We watch.” His eyes continued their methodical sweep of the area. “If there is another predator here, I would prefer to find its trail before it decides we are more interesting than the dead.”

[07:01:41] Hosokawa Kinsei – Vesper™ 細川金星 (razius) patterned his movements on the bird, slowly moving forward, stair by stair to stand alongside the elder Killer. He was thoughtful. His hand slowly moved out to point toward the bodies and his voice, a mere whisper, more of a resonance in his chest spoke to the Caste Master who he had followed for over 600 years, “Note the different markings on the bodies. This is not only the work of one hungry tarn. You and I both know what some of those marks mean, note the claw marks, bite marks, and the way the intestines have been eaten. Look around for the six paws in the ground. Do you see any footprints? If the prints are not here, then something else may have occurred to these bodies prior to their demise elsewhere. Question is, aboard the ship, or on land? We have a problem if what carried the bodies here is still alive.”

[07:09:03] Tweet (voraciousbirb) continued to feast, having picked up and gobbled down a few limbs before his massive foot pushed down one of the ripped torso’s and dug his claw into it, making sure it remained in place while his beak dug into the exposed huge wound to tear out a few damaged organs from whoever injured the man before. The men laying scattered were of the ship wreck, all seeming to have tried to flee the scene yet were brutally mowed down by something. About three swords were on the ground, guards clearly as their helmets were either still on their heads after colliding with the stone edge of the stair’s wall or just laying around. There was a heavily dented large cage halfway submerged next to the ship wreck, the cage big enough to hold a kaiila within. The ground to the stairs left several footprints behind, sizes varying from small to huge. The beasts were not just adults. Upon closer look, the former war Tarn had a few nicked feathers around his head, scars beneath, some were on his chest and a few on his belly. He was not unfamiliar with the harsh Gorean life as a war Tarn but he also couldnt speak his own story, yet it showed by his feather coat.

[07:14:23] Crow (melchior.wardell)’s attention followed Vesper’s pointing hand, and his expression hardened slightly as he studied the ground around the bodies.”Exactly.” His eyes moved across the scene again, but this time with considerably more interest. The swords. The helmets. The cage. The footprints. His gaze stopped at the cage. “A cage…” He stepped no closer, instead studying the heavy dents and its position half beneath the water. “Large enough for a kaiila. And apparently important enough to have been aboard.” His attention shifted to the footprints leading toward the stairs. Small ones. Large ones. Far too many variations to dismiss as a single creature. “Those are not the tracks of one beast. Young and mature.” He let the conclusion settle before looking toward the tarn again. The scars and damaged feathers did not escape his notice either. A former war tarn, by the look of him. The evidence of an old life written across its body. “That tarn has survived battles.” There was no pity in his voice. Something closer to recognition. He studied the nicked feathers around its head, then the scars beneath them, the chest, the belly. “And whatever happened here, he survived this too.” His attention returned to the tracks. “Now we have a different question.” He pointed subtly toward the cage. “What was inside it And more importantly…” His gaze followed the varying footprints toward the stairs. “…what got out?”

[07:17:48] Hosokawa Kinsei – Vesper™ 細川金星 (razius) eyes moved beyond the great bird and outward to where the wind was causing ripped sails to flap on great masts that were strewn around the rocks. The bird had his full attention to begin with, but now he was starting to piece together what may have happened. The helmets on some of the men meant one thing to him, “What men who had trained for war could not handle.” was his only response. He let that phrase sink down and land heavy, like the blood that was soaking into the ground itself. “Predators……know predators, Killer.”

[07:23:25] Tweet (voraciousbirb) lowered his head to wipe some of the guts off of his beak on the ground.
Whether the crew had a crucial incident on the ship itself and it crashed against the rocks at the shore or the navigator had done an error in reading the map was unclear. The only thing clear with the massacre at the Tarn’s feet, death came fast and ruthless. These beasts were hungry and they showed no mercy. Trained or not, would be just an unclear.
The gate they stood by was just as dented as the cage half submerged, a few tufts of fur stuck on the edge of the open gate. There was little blood smeared over the wall on the men’s left side, barely injured beasts leaving a trail up the stairs. They werent just near the shore, it was leading into the city. The tarn finally seemed to be sated for now, raising back to his imposing height again and stretched his wings before shaking his heavy form. That wary gaze snapped back towards the two men, watching momentarily before giving another call out, as if offering them the rest to
feast on. His attention snapped up the stairs with a tilt or two of his head, something must have caught his attention earlier before he came down here, then he had been hunting and lost his prey before.

[07:29:16] Crow (melchior.wardell) ‘s gaze followed Vesper’s toward the torn sails and scattered masts, his expression becoming still. The words required no explanation. “Predators know predators.” He repeated it quietly, almost testing the weight of it. His eyes returned to the tracks. Small. Large. Too many. Then to the cage, the dead guards, and finally the scarred tarn feeding as though none of it concerned him. “No trained warrior survives what he cannot recognize.” A pause. “And these men recognized something.” He crouched once more, examining the nearest footprints without touching them. “They ran.” His gaze followed the trail toward the wreckage. “That tells me more than the swords.” He rose slowly. “Whatever came out of that cage was not something they intended to fight or wanted to loose.” His eyes shifted toward the dark spaces beyond the wreck, scanning for movement. “And if there were young among them…” he turned to Vesper. “I think these beasts must have been tortured to become as vicious. Perhaps starved … and with the
dreadful currents a small error could be just enough for an opportunity.” A faint narrowing of his eyes. “I think we aren’t only looking at a wreck site.” He glanced toward Vesper. “We may be standing at the edge of an escape and what ever it is … “

[07:34:45] Hosokawa Kinsei – Vesper™ 細川金星 (razius): me watched the great black tarn settle after its feast, studying the scars beneath its nicked feathers and the way its behavior toward him had changed. Warning cries had become watching, clicking, and finally eating comfortably in his presence. His head tilted slightly, mirroring the bird. “I have been thinking that I need a tarn.” His eyes dropped to the severed hand disappearing down its throat. “There may be logistical complications. I am uncertain how many bodies I can reasonably provide each week.” A pause. “Failed lads might reduce expenses, but I doubt they constitute a nutritionally complete diet.” He moved another careful step closer. “You were a tarnsman once, Killer. I suspect the first lesson is convincing one not to remove your head.” The faintest amusement touched his expression before his attention shifted to the battered cage. “Although perhaps we would understand one another.” He glanced at Crow, holding his eyes knowingly. “You have seen me cornered.” Crow had. More than once. When every calculated escape vanished and someone finally believed Vesper trapped, something colder emerged. Everything became a weapon. Every weakness became an exit. Somehow, the corner always ended empty. Vesper looked from Crow to the broken cage, then toward the tracks disappearing into the city. “Perhaps we should assume whatever was inside that had much the same opinion of cages.”

[07:38:51] Tweet (voraciousbirb) had been lucky to be an airborne beast, he at least wasnt stuffed into a cage but kept down by chains that dug into his feather coat. He was not a tarn of those who had lost their lives, but something that was to be transported elsewhere. The tarn rose a wing to groom himself between the feathers, picking at a few wood splinters that had embedded themselves into his dark coat. He shook himself again and a single ring of steel from the chain that held him down was flung towards the gate, through it and hit the wall next to Crow before dropping down with a clank. The voyage of the beasts was a tiring thing, leaving each irritated by the chatter of the crew, the laughter, the songs, the lack of attention for food for these animals. It wasnt just a ship filled with any beast of Gor, it didnt hold a giani, or a leem, nothing gentle emerged from it. Seeing the two didnt move for the food on the ground and merely chattered in their own language, he’d spread his wings and took flight, aiming to fly right up into the city as if he was looking for someone – or more, something.

[07:44:32] Crow (melchior.wardell)’s mouth twitched at Vesper’s assessment, though his eyes remained on the battered cage. “I remember.” His gaze moved briefly to Vesper. “And I remember that being cornered never made you less dangerous.” He looked back toward the tracks disappearing up the stairs. “Perhaps that is what we are looking at here.” He looked closer to the damaged gate. His eyes examined the fur caught against the metal, then the dents, measuring the direction of force. “As for convincing one not to remove your head…” He looked at Vesper again. “Best not to buy one from those that sold you Bertram.” His expression settled into something more thoughtful. “But this one has chosen not to attack us. He watched. He tested us. He decided we weren’t a threat to what remained.” But when it suddenly took a different motion he would step back, measuring the danger once again. “So. You weren’t the cargo.” His eyes followed the great bird as it spread its wings. “You were the prisoner.” The tarn launched itself upward, powerful wings
driving the air around them as it climbed toward the city. He watched its flight path carefully. “He’s looking for something.” His gaze remained fixed on the dark shape until it disappeared among the buildings. “Or someone.” He looked down at the discarded ring of steel. “Which means the cage may not have been intended for him at all.”

[07:47:18] Hosokawa Kinsei – Vesper™ 細川金星 (razius) looked to Crow, “It hunts. The tarn is the harbinger. It is the messenger just as much as if it wore the golden slash along its helm.” He paused a moment. “Do you have a contract with gold secured with the city? You know now that the tarn is the ticket to find what it may still wish to devour. It is the guide to what waits still in the city.” He watched the great beast soar higher in the sky. “Perhaps, after we have secured a place of refuge, that knowledge could come in very handy during contract negotiations?” His gaze followed the black shape between the buildings, measuring each turn of its wings rather than merely admiring its flight. “Whatever escaped that ship scattered into the city. The tarn was chained beside them. It knows their scent, their sounds, perhaps their habits. And unlike us, it does not need tracks in the mud to follow them.” His eyes briefly dropped to the steel ring lying near Crow’s feet. “Someone transported a collection of predators together, starved and restrained them, then lost control of all of them at once. Now one predator is showing us where the others went.” The faintest smile touched his mouth. “There are men who would pay considerably more for that information after they discover what happens when they do not have it.” He looked toward Crow again. “No need to frighten them with possibilities. Let the city discover the problem for itself.” His attention returned upward, following the tarn. “Then we can offer the solution.”

[07:51:21] Crow (melchior.wardell) watched the tarn disappear between the rooftops, his expression thoughtful as Vesper laid out the possibilities. “A harbinger.” His gaze dropped briefly to the steel ring near his feet before returning to the city. “Then we don’t need to chase what it hunts.” A faint, knowing smile appeared. “We only need to watch where it goes.” He considered Vesper’s question about the contract, then gave a slow shake of his head. “Not yet. I have been learning Avarra before offering anything. A contract made before understanding the hand you’re dealing with is simply gambling.” His eyes moved across the city below. “But this…” He gestured subtly toward the fading silhouette of the tarn. “…is useful information.” Hs attention sharpened.”If the city discovers several predators moving through its streets before anyone understands where they came from, there will be panic. Panic makes people talk. It makes officials act. And eventually, someone will want the problem solved.” He looked toward Vesper. “And then we don’t sell them fear. We sell them certainty.” His gaze followed the tarn’s last known direction. “First, we need to know what it is leading us toward. How many there are. What kind of predators escaped. Whether they remain together.” A faint smirk returned. “And whether our harbinger intends to lead us to the problem…Let Avarra discover the danger.” He started up the stairs. “We’ll discover the value.”

A City Worth Watching

Posted in Avarra, Black Caste on September 1, 2026 by crow1971

[10:44:34] Crow (melchior.wardell) continued along his way, his attention moving naturally across the street until a familiar face caught his eye. He slowed, recognizing the woman from their previous meeting in Var Kor, or what was now known as Valaris. He inclined his head respectfully. “Greetings, Sir and Lady Neeve.” His gaze lingered for a moment, quietly taking in the pair. He was still learning Avarra. Who was who, what position each held, and how the various pieces of the city fitted together. For now, he was content simply to greet a familiar face and observe.

[10:48:18] ᴅᴏᴍɪɴɪᴄ ᴅ’ᴍᴀʀɪ ɢʀᴇʏ (shawnmec): “Tal sir.” he responded with a nod and a smile as he turned on his heel to view the location of the voice that greeted him “How is the day treating you sir?” he asked as his blueish grayish eyes too in his black outfit and it didn’t take him long to assume why but what he did with his life was not his business

[10:49:50] Neeve Barbosa (kristie.tigerpaw) turned at the familiar voice, recognition coming quickly as she spotted Crow. A warm smile touched her features and she dipped her head in greeting. “Tal, Crow. It is good to see you again.” Her eyes flickered briefly toward Dominic as he offered his own greeting before returning to the man dressed in black. “I see you have found your way to Avarra as well. I hope the city has been treating you kindly so far?” There was a slight amusement in her expression. “It can take a little while to work out who everyone is and where everything is around here. I still occasionally discover something I swear wasn’t there the day before.” She gave a soft laugh. “Have you settled in, or are you still finding your way around?”

[10:52:12] Crow (melchior.wardell) returned the greeting with a slight inclination of his head, his eyes briefly taking in the man before him. The green attire had already told him enough to make an educated guess, but assumptions were rarely as useful as answers. “Tal, Sir. Another day without the need of any of your caste. So I can not complain.” A faint, almost imperceptible smile touched his expression. “I am still learning Avarra. There are indeed many faces I have yet to place and even more names I have yet to attach to them.” His gaze settled on the man but than he broke his gaze as it turned to Neeve. “But I find walking the city is a good way to correct that.” He paused casually. “And you? Has Avarra been treating you well?” he tipped his head to the infirmary. “A beautiful spot … very efficient and a lot of space.” it was clear he had been here before.

[10:57:06] ᴅᴏᴍɪɴɪᴄ ᴅ’ᴍᴀʀɪ ɢʀᴇʏ (shawnmec): “Yes its always a good day to not find yourself on one of mines or Lady Neeve Beds” he chuckled as he listened the man. He could see they were friends and to further not disrupt the reunion he decided it best to take his leave “Well it was nice meeting you…But I need to step away…please take care” he smiled as he took his leave ((Rl calls real quick will be back soon))

[11:00:32] Neeve Barbosa (kristie.tigerpaw) gave a small laugh at Dominic’s words, turning her head towards him as he made to leave. “Hopefully neither of us shall be occupying one of those beds anytime soon. Take care, Dominic.” She offered him a warm nod before her attention returned to Crow, her gaze following his gesture towards the infirmary. “Avarra has treated me rather well, thank you.” Her smile broadened before she regarded him with a touch more curiosity. “You sound as though you’ve already had a rather thorough look around the infirmary, though.” One brow lifted teasingly. “Efficient, spacious… that is quite the assessment for a man merely walking the city and learning its faces.” She chuckled softly, gesturing towards the building. “Have you had cause to visit us already, or have you simply been inspecting the important places first?”

[11:04:23] ʟᴀɪɴᴇʏ ᴅᴇᴠᴇʀᴇᴀᴜx (dollytamalie): Greetings, Free,” she says as she bows her head. “I am in search of the acting scribe. Could someone please direct me to the right location?

[11:04:56] Crow (melchior.wardell) dipped his head towards Dominic’s in farewell. The motion betraying a high caste upbringing. “Be well, Sir.” His expression shifted into the faintest hint of amusement at her observation. He inclined his head toward the infirmary. “Not visited. Observed.” His eyes briefly moved toward the building again. “I find it useful to know where the important places are before I have reason to need them.” He looked back to Neeve. “And physicians tend to be important.” A small pause, his tone remaining casual. “I have been learning Avarra from the outside in. The temple. The gates. The places where people gather. The people who seem to matter.” His gaze returned to her, curious rather than intrusive. “But now you’ve made me curious, Lady Neeve. If I am putting together the pieces of Avarra…” His eyes briefly flicked toward Dominic’s departing direction. “…who is it that holds the reigns in the infirmary?” he turned to the new arrival and dipped his head “Greetings lady.” To your left.” he instructed.

[11:10:12] Neeve Barbosa (kristie.tigerpaw) smiled towards the newly arrived woman and dipped her head in greeting, lifting a hand to point her towards the large building with blue flags nearby. “Tal, Lady. You should find the Scribes that way. If not, someone within should be able to point you in the right direction.” Her attention drifted back to Crow, and the smile upon her lips turned decidedly more mischievous at his question. “I’ll give you two guesses,” she offered, folding her hands neatly before herself. “If you don’t get it, you owe me a drink.” A soft laugh escaped her, clearly rather entertained by the prospect. “You have been observing Avarra so very carefully, after all. Temple, gates, gathering places… people who seem to matter.” She repeated the last part with a teasing lift of her brow. “Surely a man conducting such a thorough investigation has noticed who spends an unreasonable amount of her life wandering in and out of that infirmary?” She tipped her head towards it, giving him absolutely no further help. “Two guesses, Crow. Choose wisely.”

[11:11:33] Leol (camcam0731): Would be walking about the city holding wickers of wine seeing persons he had not met before in this new place and would give them all a gentle bow. “Tal Master, Mistress and Mistress.”

[11:13:22] Neeve Barbosa (kristie.tigerpaw): Greetings Kajirus

[11:13:36] Crow (melchior.wardell) ‘s brow lifted slightly at the challenge. He glanced toward the infirmary, then back to Neeve, clearly considering the possibilities. “Two guesses and a drink if I fail?” A faint smirk appeared. “You make this sound less like learning Avarra and more like a wager.” He studied her for another moment before answering. “First guess… you?” He let the silence linger for a heartbeat. “Though I suspect you’ve made that one far too obvious.” His eyes narrowed slightly in thought. “Second guess…” A pause. “…someone who has made herself particularly difficult for me to overlook.”The corner of his mouth twitched. “Now, Lady Neeve, I believe I have just discovered why you suggested a drink rather than simply giving me the answer.” he turned to the slave. His eyes would take him in as he was unfamiliar to him. “Greetings slave.” he paused wondering why the slave had interupted the conversation. Surely there was purpose to it?

[11:15:14] ʟᴀɪɴᴇʏ ᴅᴇᴠᴇʀᴇᴀᴜx (dollytamalie): Bowing her head once again, she offers a smile that stretches the seams of her veil. “Thank you lady. I wish you both a wonderful day,” she says, noticing the person approaching. She bows her head once more and makes her way in the direction where she needs to find a scribe.

[11:19:31] Neeve Barbosa (kristie.tigerpaw): me offered Lainey a warm dip of her head as the woman departed. “And you, Lady. I hope you find who you seek.” Her gaze shifted briefly towards the approaching kajirus, acknowledging him with a small nod before turning her attention back to Crow. A rather smug little smile began to creep across her features. “Oh, Crow…” she laughed softly, shaking her head. “So very close, but I’m afraid close does not win wagers.” She lifted a finger as though correcting an especially important detail. “I am the Assistant Head of the Physicians’ Caste here in Avarra, not the one who holds the reins entirely.” Her smile widened triumphantly. “Which means, technically, neither of your guesses was correct. And technically…” She let the pause linger deliberately. “…you owe me a drink.” His other choice of words hadn’t escaped her either, and one brow lifted. “Although I am rather curious about this woman who has made herself particularly difficult for you to overlook. She sounds troublesome.” The innocence in her expression was entirely unconvincing. “Perhaps you can tell me more about her over that drink you now owe me.”

[11:20:30] Leol (camcam0731): “Please be well.” He would speak softly to all , not wanting to pass without word or seem rude, before continuing on his search, glad there were signs pointing to all places necessary.

[11:23:14] Crow (melchior.wardell) gave a quiet chuckle, accepting the loss with a small incline of his head. “Then a drink it is, Lady Neeve. A wager is a wager.” His gaze lingered on her smug expression for a moment before he added, “Though I suspect you knew precisely how to arrange that outcome before you offered me the two guesses.” At the mention of the mysterious woman, his expression became just slightly more guarded. “Troublesome? Perhaps.” He glanced toward the infirmary, then back to Neeve. “But I have learned that the people worth remembering are rarely the ones who make themselves easy to overlook.” A faint smile returned. “As for telling you about her… I think I’ll let you earn that story with the drink you just won.” As the slave passed he would follow him with his gaze. Giving it not much thought as he did so. “But I guess the man of just now might be the Head of Caste?” he now assumed. It was one face had seen enter more often than once.

[11:31:07] Neeve Barbosa (kristie.tigerpaw) nodded and gestured for Crow to follow, leading the way down towards the terrace where she knew they could find something to drink. “Yes. Dominic,” she confirmed as they walked. “I appointed him recently, after putting him through a rather difficult trial which, to his credit, he passed.” There was a small note of pride in her voice despite the thoughtful expression that followed. “He is still finding his feet in the position and there are things he will need guidance with, but under the right tutelage I believe he will make a fine Head of Caste. The city will be watching him for a while, of course. A title can be given, but trust and respect still have to be earned.” Reaching the terrace, she glanced back at Crow, that earlier mischievous smile returning. “So it seems your observations weren’t entirely terrible. You merely chose the wrong physician for your second guess.” She settled herself comfortably before adding, “Now… about this drink I so terribly and unfairly manipulated you into owing me.” Her brow arched. “And afterwards, perhaps I’ll decide whether I’ve earned the story of this supposedly troublesome woman who is so difficult for you to overlook.”

[11:34:22] Crow (melchior.wardell) followed along toward the terrace, listening quietly as Neeve spoke of Dominic. His attention sharpened slightly at the mention of the trial and the expectations placed upon the new Head of Caste. “Then Dominic has been given a position, but not yet the weight that comes with it.” He glanced toward Neeve. “That will come with time. Watching how a man handles authority after receiving it usually tells you more than watching him earn the title.” As they reached the terrace, He only settled after she had. “And yes, Lady Neeve. I concede the wager.” A small, amused smile touched his features. “But I am beginning to suspect you have made a habit of turning innocent questions into profitable ventures.” He regarded her for a moment. “As for the woman…” He paused, deliberately letting the words hang. “You have already earned the drink. The story, however, may require considerably better wine.”

[11:41:37] Neeve Barbosa (kristie.tigerpaw): me nodded thoughtfully at Crow’s observation of Dominic. “When you’ve watched enough men take up such positions only to flaunt the authority that comes with them—or allow their own prejudices to dictate how they wield it—you learn to be cautious.” She gave a small shrug. “Some want the title and the power far more than they want the work and responsibility that comes with it. I ended up taking the position myself in Var-Kor for much the same reason. Those who came before simply didn’t have the muster for what the caste needed.” Reaching the table, she slipped gracefully into a seat and caught the attention of a nearby slave, instructing them to bring Crow whatever drink he desired before adding, “Larma juice for me.” Her gaze returned to Crow, accompanied by a soft smile. “So I’m afraid your considerably better wine will have to wait, Sir. I still have plenty of tasks ahead of me before the day is done, and a Physician ought to approach her work with a clear mind.” Her brow lifted, amusement returning. “Besides, now you’ve told me the story requires better wine, you’ve only made me more curious. I shall simply have to remember that you owe me the tale when I eventually permit you to buy it.”

[11:45:07] Crow (melchior.wardell) listened without interrupting, one brow lifting slightly at Neeve’s admission. There was no surprise in his expression, only the quiet recognition of someone speaking from experience. “Then you did not take the position because you wanted the title.” His gaze settled on her for a moment. “You took it because leaving it in the hands of those who lacked the will to carry it would have been worse.” A faint, almost amused curve touched his mouth as the slave arrived to take his order. “Something strong enough to be worth drinking, but not strong enough to make a Physician question my judgment.” He looked back toward Neeve. “And now I am apparently in debt twice. First for the drink, and then for a story I have not yet decided whether I should tell.” A quiet chuckle escaped him. “You are remarkably skilled at collecting debts, Lady Neeve. I suspect that may be another talent of the Physicians’ Caste.” He leaned back slightly, studying her with mild amusement. “But very well. Keep your clear mind. Do your work. And when you eventually decide the day has earned better wine…” His eyes narrowed faintly with that familiar dry humor. “I will remember that I owe you a tale.” he turned to the slave and stated. “Bosk Milk, please.” he paused as he turned to her. “I believe it might be smart to keep my mind clear too.” he winked there. If one did not know he was perhaps that old tarnsman of old, charming and one that took life upon the chin.

[11:53:53] Neeve Barbosa (kristie.tigerpaw) considered his words for a moment before giving a slow nod. “Something like that. I never particularly sought the title. I wanted the caste to function as it should, and eventually it became apparent that complaining about those doing the job poorly was considerably less useful than simply doing it myself.” Her expression softened somewhat. “Though, truthfully, I didn’t mind the title in the end. There was a certain joy in knowing I could make sure the city received the quality of care it deserved. I could concern myself with patients, training good Physicians and ensuring the infirmary was run properly, rather than wasting my time on politics, petty disputes and those who cared more for power than purpose.” A faint smile tugged at her lips. “That part of leadership I could happily do without.” Her attention shifted towards the slave as Crow made his request, and she couldn’t help but laugh when the formidable drink he’d described somehow became bosk milk. “Bosk milk?” Her brows rose as she turned back towards him. “Sir, moments ago you requested something strong enough to be worth drinking. I fear your reputation may never recover from this.” She caught the wink and shook her head, clearly amused. “Still, perhaps keeping your mind clear is wise. I would hate for you to later claim this mysterious tale became exaggerated by drink.” She paused a moment “So I shall hold you to it. Better wine, another day, and the story you now most certainly owe me.” She raised her cup slightly towards him. “To clear minds, worthwhile work and outstanding debts.”

[12:00:49] Crow (melchior.wardell)’s expression remained composed, though the faintest hint of amusement appeared as he glanced down at the cup of bosk milk that had been placed before him. “Reputation is a curious thing, Lady Neeve. It seems mine has survived considerably worse than a glass of milk.” He lifted the cup, considering it with exaggerated seriousness before taking a measured drink. “And you misunderstand. I did say something worth drinking. I never specified that it had to be fermented.” A brief smirk accompanied the words before his attention returned to her. Her explanation of leadership had caught his interest more than the teasing had. He gave a slow nod. “That, I can understand. There is a certain efficiency in removing oneself from the politics and simply making certain the work gets done.” He turned the cup slightly between his fingers. “Power for the sake of power has always seemed rather inefficient to me. Responsibility, at least, produces something.” His eyes settled on her raised cup, and he lifted his own in response. “To clear minds, worthwhile work…” A pause. “…and outstanding debts.” He took another drink of the bosk milk, then added dryly, “Though I suspect the debt involving the wine is considerably more dangerous than this one.” He admired the woman for how she viewed leadership. Strangely that he had similar views and yet was faced with his position because another was not able to truly deliver.

[12:08:21] Neeve Barbosa (kristie.tigerpaw) touched her cup lightly towards his in acknowledgement of the toast before taking a small sip of her larma juice. “Very well. I shall concede that bosk milk is, technically, worth drinking. Though I reserve the right to question whether that was what you originally had in mind when you asked for something strong.” A playful smile lingered. “And the wine debt is only dangerous if you continue making the story sound increasingly interesting. At this rate, I’ll expect quite the tale.” As she lowered her cup, however, her attention remained upon him. There had been something subtle in the way his manner shifted when they spoke of leadership and responsibility. Nothing she could readily put a name to, merely a change she had noticed—the slight distance in his expression, perhaps, or the way his thoughts seemed to wander somewhere beyond their conversation. The teasing slowly softened from her features. “You look as though something I said has set your thoughts wandering somewhere considerably less pleasant than bosk milk and outstanding debts,” she observed, her tone gentler now. She turned the cup slowly between her fingers, studying him for a moment before giving a small shrug. “Forgive the curiosity in me. I tend to notice when someone’s manner changes.” She leaned back slightly, deliberately leaving him room rather than pressing him for an answer. “Is everything well?” A pause followed before she added, “You have spent much of our conversation learning about me and my place in Avarra, yet I’ve barely asked about yours.” Her brow lifted faintly. “So perhaps it is my turn. What brought you here, Crow? And have you found what you were looking for?”

[12:13:40] Crow (melchior.wardell) was quiet for a moment, his fingers resting loosely around the cup. Neeve had noticed the shift. That alone told him something about her, not merely that she was a Physician, but that she paid attention to people when they thought they were giving nothing away. His gaze lowered briefly to the bosk milk before returning to her. “Everything is well enough.” The answer came simply, without dramatics. After a moment, he added, “But you were correct. Something you said did set my thoughts wandering.” He considered his words before continuing. “Responsibility. Purpose. Taking a position because someone has to make certain the work is done properly.” A faint, thoughtful expression crossed his face. “It reminded me that there are places where people take responsibility because they must… and places where they take it because they want what comes with it.” He gave the smallest shrug. “I have spent enough time watching the difference.” Her question about why he had come to Avarra drew a slight smile. “As for what brought me here…” He looked toward the terrace, letting his eyes wander briefly over Avarra below them. “Curiosity, initially. A new city is information. Who holds authority. Who actually exercises it. Which institutions function as they should. Who talks too much. Who listens.” His gaze returned to Neeve. “And who notices when someone’s manner changes.” There was a hint of amusement in that last remark. “As to whether I have found what I was looking for…” He took another drink of the milk, apparently deciding it was safer than the wine. “Not yet.” A pause. “But I have learned considerably more than I knew when I arrived.” His eyes narrowed slightly with quiet amusement. “And today, apparently, I have learned that the Assistant Head of Physicians in Avarra is exceptionally good at collecting debts.” he would let that drift in the air before adding “I am pleased to see and hear that you are doing well and here. Let us hope that my craft will never thrive here.” he wished genuinely.

[12:18:37] Neeve Barbosa (kristie.tigerpaw) listened quietly, her expression thoughtful as he spoke. There was clearly more behind his words than he was inclined to share, but she wasn’t going to pry. Instead, a small smile appeared when he returned once more to her apparent talent for collecting debts. “Exceptionally good? I’ll take that as a compliment.” She lifted her larma juice towards him before taking one final sip. His last comment drew a more genuine laugh from her. “On that, Crow, we can certainly agree. I hope your craft finds Avarra terribly disappointing and mine has little more to contend with than the occasional scraped knee and an overly dramatic patient.” She set her cup down and rose from her seat, smoothing her robes as she did. “Unfortunately, responsibility calls, and mine presently appears to have taken the form of an unreasonable amount of paperwork waiting for me in the infirmary.” She gave a resigned little sigh before looking back at him with a warm smile. “It was good to see you again, Crow. I’m glad Avarra has given you reason to linger long enough for our paths to cross.”Taking a few steps away, she paused and glanced back over her shoulder, that mischievous look returning. “And don’t think I’ve forgotten. I fully intend to collect my debt—the better wine and the story that accompanies it.” She dipped her head towards him. “Be well, Sir. I suspect I’ll see you around the city soon enough.” With that, she turned towards the infirmary, apparently destined to spend the remainder of her day fighting paperwork rather than patients.

[12:22:07] Crow (melchior.wardell) watched her go for a moment, the faintest trace of amusement remaining upon his features. At the mention of paperwork, his expression turned almost sympathetic. “Paperwork.” He shook his head slowly. “Of all the dangers a Physician faces, I suspect that may be the most difficult to treat.” His gaze followed her toward the infirmary before he looked down at the cup in his hand. “And yes, Lady Neeve. I suspect our respective crafts may both benefit from Avarra remaining pleasantly uneventful.” A brief pause, then that dry smile returned. “Though I make no promises.” He raised the cup slightly in farewell. “Be well. And try not to let the paperwork win.” As she disappeared toward the infirmary, He remained seated for another moment, quietly considering the conversation. The lady had given him more useful information than she likely realized, not only about the Physicians’ Caste, but about the woman herself. He finally rose, setting the empty cup aside. “And the wine debt…” A quiet smirk. “Apparently Ihave created my own problem there.”

The House Where Fortune Lies

Posted in Avarra, Black Caste on August 31, 2026 by crow1971

Crow did not arrive in Avarra with banners.

He brought no proclamation from the Black Caste, no demand for land, and no announcement that an Assassin had taken interest in the city.

He simply found a place where men were willing to lose money.

A gambling den.

It was not the grandest establishment in Avarra, nor did Crow require it to be. What mattered was its location. The right sort of people eventually passed through places such as this.

Merchants with too much coin.

Warriors with too much confidence.

Officials who preferred their conversations away from the ears of the city’s halls.

Men who drank too deeply and spoke too freely.

And occasionally, men who believed that because they held a position of authority, they were beyond consequence.

Crow understood gambling.

Not merely the games.

The people.

Every wager revealed something.

Who took unnecessary risks. Who cheated. Who watched the dealer instead of their cards. Who became angry when they lost. Who became generous when they won. Who always seemed to know when to leave.

It was an excellent place for an Assassin to listen.

A Fire Worth Returning To

Posted in Black Caste, Black Ember Port on August 26, 2026 by crow1971

[23:33:17] αяѕυѕ (daimos.baarer): Arsus sits alone by the campfire, listening to the quiet crackle of the burning wood. The camp is still empty; no other Assassin has returned yet. After a while, he rises from his place and makes his way toward his tent. Inside, he retrieves the last of the beans he had brought with him and stored there. Carrying them back to the fire, he settles down and begins preparing the blackwine. He first crushes the beans, grinding them down until they are coarse and fragrant. He then places the crushed beans into a clean cloth. The preparation requires hot water, so Arsus rises once more and walks over to the separate fire pit where the water kettles are kept. He checks the water, now properly heated, and carefully lifts the kettle. Returning to his place by the campfire, he slowly pours the hot water over the cloth filled with the crushed beans. The dark liquid begins to drip through, its rich aroma rising into the cool camp air. Arsus waits patiently, allowing the blackwine to steep until it has reached the strength he desires. Once it is ready, he pours the fresh blackwine into two cups. His own he prepares with Bisk milk and a little sugar, stirring it slowly until the milk blends into the dark drink. The second cup, however, he leaves completely black. No milk. No sugar. Just strong, dark blackwine—the way his old friend Crow prefers it. Crow is nowhere to be seen yet. Arsus sets the untouched cup beside him and takes his own in hand. Perhaps Crow will appear before the fire burns low. And if he does, at least Arsus will already have a cup waiting for him.

[23:44:05] Crow (melchior.wardell) had kept to the shadows longer than he had intended, moving through the camp without announcing his presence. The quiet suited him. His steps were measured, almost soundless, until the familiar scent of blackwine reached him through the cool night air. A faint curl of amusement touched his features as he spotted Arsus beside the fire, and more importantly, the second cup waiting untouched beside him. Crow approached at an unhurried pace, his gaze briefly settling upon the cup before shifting toward his old friend. “Either you have grown remarkably patient, Arsus…” he murmured, his voice carrying just enough to announce his arrival, “…or you knew I would eventually find my way back.” He lowered himself beside the fire and reached for the waiting cup, lifting it to examine the dark liquid before taking a slow drink. Strong. Bitter. Completely black. Exactly as he preferred it. Crow let the warmth settle before looking toward Arsus again. “You remembered.” There was no elaborate praise in the words. From Crow, there rarely needed to be. The small nod that followed said considerably more as he settled comfortably near the fire, allowing the silence of the camp to return around them. ((unfortunately working 😦 ))

[00:00:22] αяѕυѕ (daimos.baarer): He had noticed Crow, even though he was quiet. As he began to speak, he listened. “Patience,” he then repeated Crow’s words, “a trait we’ve been working on for a long time.” His eyes settled on the second cup as Crow reached for it. He watched as Crow lifted the cup, briefly examining the dark liquid before bringing it to his lips. Arsus remained still, his own cup resting loosely in his hand, while he observed Crow take that first slow drink. There was something familiar in the sight of it—the strong, bitter black wine disappearing from the cup exactly as Crow preferred it. No milk, no sugar, nothing to soften its sharpness. A faint smile touched the corner of Arsus’ mouth as he watched Crow lower the cup again. He did not need to ask whether it was prepared properly. Crow’s expression, and the simple way he settled beside the fire with the cup in hand, told him enough. Arsus finally lifted his own cup and took a quiet sip of his blackwine, his gaze lingering on Crow for another moment before returning to the flames. ““I rarely forget.” Three words that perhaps meant more than they seemed. “I’d hoped you’d show up here before the fire went out and the black wine got cold.” He turned his head slightly toward Crow and noticed his short hair. “Did you have a date with a forest girl?” he teased.

[00:09:12] Crow (melchior.wardell) took another slow drink from the cup, letting Arsus’ words settle before the faintest smirk appeared upon his face. His fingers remained loosely curled around the warm cup as his gaze followed Arsus’ toward the flames. “Then it seems I arrived in time,” he said quietly. “Though I suspect you would have sat here until old and grey rather than admit you were waiting for me.” At the mention of his hair, his hand briefly rose to the shortened strands, as though only now remembering the change. His eyes returned toward Arsus, amusement flickering within them. “A forest girl?” He gave a low, almost humorless chuckle. “No. Nothing quite so pleasant.” He leaned back slightly, stretching his legs toward the warmth of the fire. “Let’s just say someone decided that my hair had grown too comfortable.” His gaze narrowed playfully. “And apparently they possessed the courage to do something about it.” Crow took another sip of the bitter blackwine, then looked sideways toward Arsus. “But if you prefer, I can tell you I was ambushed by a beautiful forest woman with a knife.” A pause. “Though you would probably ask why I let her get close enough to cut it.” he quipped. “And I am sure their preference to the kind of haircut would have given that away.”

[00:32:12] αяѕυѕ (daimos.baarer): Arsus listened. Arsus always listened. He stood up and tossed another log into the fire. It was cool this morning; the weather would likely turn colder over the next few days and months. Summer was drawing to a close. The seasons change, as do so many things in the life of a Gorean. One thing hadn’t changed, despite his long absence: his deep friendship with Crow. He raised his mug to his lips again and took another sip. Yes, he had expected and hoped that Crow would show up. He probably would have burned through the entire forest and kept warming his mug over and over. “The fire wouldn’t have gone out before you arrived.” He looked back into the fire, and then the cries of some birds drew his gaze to the trees where they had gathered. Perhaps to set out together on a journey to where it would be warmer over the next few moons. “No forest girl, hmmmm. Too bad—it would certainly have been interesting.” Arsus had had quite a few encounters with forest girls, both good and not-so-good. Some ended in bloodshed, some in the furs. He had never told those stories. There hadn’t been a reason to yet. “It looks unusual,” he remarked, “I’ll get used to it.” It really did look unusual; in the darkness, Arsus probably wouldn’t have recognized Crow. At least not by his hair. Arsus enjoyed the crackling of the fire, occasionally glancing over at Crow. He would take another sip. “I’ve missed” and he took a long pause “you” he then added.

[00:45:45] Crow (melchior.wardell) fell quiet at those final words. For a moment, the teasing expression faded, replaced by something far less guarded. He looked down into the dark surface of his blackwine, watching the firelight tremble across it. Arsus had always been one of the few men who could say such things without making Crow feel the need to turn them into something lighter. He took another drink before answering. “I know.” Two simple words, spoken quietly. Crow lowered the cup and looked toward Arsus, his gaze steady across the fire. “I missed you too.” There was no hesitation this time. No joke to hide behind, no clever remark to soften it. His eyes drifted toward the birds gathering in the trees, and for a moment he watched them in silence. “Strange, isn’t it? We disappear into different corners of Gor, chase shadows, survive things we probably shouldn’t…” A faint smile touched his mouth. “And somehow, when we finally sit beside the same fire again, it feels as though very little has changed.” He shifted slightly, holding the cup between both hands as he absorbed its warmth. “Perhaps that’s why I came here.” His gaze returned to Arsus. “Not because I knew there would be black wine waiting.” A brief pause. “Because I knew you would be.” he now turned to see. “But I see you without your bond. I hope you haven’t dropped her from your tarn ?” he now teased.

[01:13:03] αяѕυѕ (daimos.baarer): Arsus nodded. No more, no less. The birds had stopped chirping. Silence settled over the camp, broken only by the crackling of the fire. Two assassins who, despite all their toughness, felt something like a bond with one another—a rarity in this caste. “I know,” he replied, almost in a whisper. He watched the flames dance in the wind as if they were performing a dance. If there were a song to go with it, he would probably call it “Two Friends.” Arsus let the words linger for a moment, his gaze fixed calmly on the flames, before turning it back to Crow. A faint, knowing smile flitted across his face. “Perhaps time isn’t as powerful as we believe,” he said softly. “It may carry us far apart and leave years between one meeting and the next… but there are some things it simply cannot break.” His eyes lingered on his old friend for just a moment longer. “Some bonds endure. No matter how long the journey is or how far it takes us from the fire we once shared together.” He leaned forward again to toss another log into the fire. “My Tarn,” he said thoughtfully, “my Tarn is still missing. I’m searching for him. I believe he’s hoping I’ll find him.” Arsus had a bond with his Tarn that was almost impossible to describe in words. His “tarn” had never let him down. Arsus had returned from the mountains alone; his first stop had been Holmesk. His Bond had been waiting. She had rebuilt the Court. All by herself. His gold had helped her survive. The city of Holmesk was coming back to life. “My girl is in Holmesk, waiting for my return. She’s preparing for another trip to Besnit. Trade relations seem to have stalled; Holmesk still owes Besnit a few goods. I must smooth things over before they turn into a storm.” The person responsible for making these agreements was currently nowhere to be found; perhaps he had perished when Holmesk was destroyed by a landslide. Arsus had to ensure that relations between the two cities did not escalate into war.

[01:37:37] Crow (melchior.wardell) listened without interrupting, his eyes following the flames as Arsus spoke of his Tarn, of Holmesk, and of the fragile line between trade and war. The words carried more weight than a simple report of what had happened. He knew what it meant to return to a place and find that everything had changed while certain bonds somehow remained untouched. He turned the cup slowly between his fingers, the black wine nearly forgotten for a moment. “A Tarn like that is not simply lost,” he said quietly. “As for Holmesk…” he took another drink, considering his next words. “A city trying to rebuild while owing goods to another city is already standing on uncertain ground. If the man who made those agreements is gone, someone has to become the voice that remains.” He looked back toward Arsus. “You.” A faint smirk appeared. “You always did have a talent for walking into problems that sensible men would avoid.” The smirk faded as quickly as it came. “But you shouldn’t have to walk into this one alone.” he settled back beside the fire, his shoulder relaxing slightly. “When you leave for Besnit, if you need another set of eyes, another blade, or simply someone who knows when a negotiation is about to become an ambush…” He raised his cup slightly toward Arsus. “Come find me.”

[01:58:52] αяѕυѕ (daimos.baarer): Arsus was silent for quite a while. His black wine was empty; he set the cup down on the floor beside him. He listened to his friend’s words, and when he thought about it, he was right—both regarding the Tarn and the troubles he kept getting himself into. Sometimes he saw himself not only as an assassin but also as someone who tried to uphold the Gorean order in ways other than just with a knife. He was no ambassador—at least not in the sense that others would understand an ambassador. Arsus wouldn’t necessarily call it unreasonable; rather, he’d call it different. He smiled at his own thoughts. “War doesn’t solve problems; it only creates new ones,” he replied quietly. “I’m going to meet with the head of the merchants again; there’s more to discuss than just this issue—an issue I can’t talk about yet. I’ll fill you in once trust has been established. Fortunately, she hasn’t spread the word yet that Holmesk still owes a few goods. I think I can sort it out through ‘official channels’ somehow.” Arsus was grateful to Crow for the offered help, and he would certainly take him up on it. He thought for a moment about whether he should take him along. It was quite possible that Crow knew the lady. He decided against it. “As soon as I notice anything strange, I’ll let you know. My slave will come with me and wait for me at the market. If I don’t show up again, she’ll be instructed to let you know. I have to go there alone for now; trust is still very fragile at the moment.” Trust sometimes took a long time to build, and Arsus needed the trust of this woman, who indeed knew how to choose her words very carefully.

[02:25:09] Crow (melchior.wardell) listened quietly, his expression becoming more thoughtful as Arsus explained. He did not question the things his friend was unwilling to speak of yet. There were secrets that were better kept until the moment was right, and he understood that better than most. “Then alone it is,” he said simply. He turned his empty cup in his hand before setting it down beside him. “Trust is a blade with two edges. Push too hard and you cut yourself. Move too quickly and the other person wonders what you’re trying to hide.” His gaze remained on the fire. “If she has chosen her words carefully, then she is measuring you just as carefully. Let her. Give her the time to decide that you are someone she can speak freely with.” Crow glanced toward Arsus. “And your slave waiting at the market is a wise precaution. If you do not return, I’ll know something has gone wrong.” A faint, knowing smile appeared. “Merchants rarely survive by being careless.” He leaned back, stretching one leg toward the warmth of the fire. “As for the official channels…” he chuckled. “I suppose it is comforting to know that even assassins occasionally have to deal with paperwork.” His eyes returned to Arsus, the amusement fading into something more serious. “You don’t need to tell me what you cannot tell me yet. When the time comes, I’ll listen.” He paused. “And if the meeting turns sour, you already know where to find me.” Crow reached for the empty cup, studying it for a moment before looking back toward the flames. “Just make sure you come back to finish the conversation.”

[02:54:08] αяѕυѕ (daimos.baarer): Arsus noticed Crow set the cup down on the floor. It was empty, just like his own. “Perhaps trust really is a blade,” I replied softly. “But you don’t fear a blade just because it’s sharp. You learn to wield it.” My gaze drifted back to the flames. “I’ll give her time. If her words are cautious, then I’ll choose mine carefully as well. And if one day she speaks freely to me, then I’ll know she’s doing it of her own free will.” Arsus ran his hand over his tunic as he spoke—perhaps he just wanted to smooth it out a little. He got ready to set out; it was going to be a long day, especially since the journey to Besnit wouldn’t exactly be a short one. He hoped Kedja had already finished packing. “I’ll talk to you about it when the time is right, Crow.” He knew Crow would understand. Sometimes it’s better to keep something to yourself when the time isn’t right—and, if necessary, take it with you to the realm of dust—so as not to endanger others. Arsus would come back and finish the conversation; at least, that was his plan, and Arsus was known for carrying out his plans. “I know where to find you.” Arsus would stand up. “I have to go now, old friend,” he’d say, then pause for a long moment. “And I’ll be back.” He might place his hand on Crow’s shoulder as a farewell.

[03:10:05] Crow (melchior.wardell) remained seated as Arsus rose, his gaze following his old friend. He listened to those final words without interruption. And I’ll be back. His eyes lifted to meet his. “I know.” When Arsus’ hand settled briefly upon his shoulder, He placed his own hand over it for a moment. There was no need for ceremony between them. No elaborate farewell. The gesture carried enough weight on its own. “Go, then. Do what you came to do.” He released Arsus’ shoulder and leaned back slightly, watching him prepare to leave. “And Arsus…” A pause. “And if you don’t return quickly enough, I’ll come looking for you. You know me well enough to know I won’t be particularly polite about it.” His expression softened again as he looked toward his friend. “Walk carefully, old friend. Let the merchant have her secrets. Let her measure you. And remember…” He glanced briefly toward the empty cup that had once held the black wine Arsus had prepared for him. “Some fires are worth returning to.” He gave a small nod. “Until then.”

[03:19:46] αяѕυѕ (daimos.baarer): “I know,” Arsus replied quietly. Then he set off. He moved quietly away from the campfire; not even the birds in the trees were startled. Crow would be looking for him. He nodded to himself. Nothing had changed. Trust, despite the long time they hadn’t seen each other.

[04:14:26] Crow (melchior.wardell) was doing his round. Just to check up on things as he did once in a while. Perhaps in idle hope to find his tharlarion. It was quiet and he enjoyed that moment of not running into those that needed him for some reason. As he passed the back of the Inn after getting a black wine inside he noted the Innkeeper. “Ah … over thinking your sins?” his voice dark and with that natural authority.

[04:17:53] пαмıκα тσʟαп (dinara.braveheart) dozes off, still holding the book in her hand. Apparently, it was so boring that her eyes had closed. The sound of the waves, however, wasn’t exactly helping her stay awake either. When a deep voice rings out, she jumps, causing the book to slip to the floor. “By the gods,” she mutters, and her first instinct is to reach for her skirt before she’s awake enough to look around. She blinks briefly and checks the fit of her veil with her right hand as she looks at the assassin. “Do you always have to sneak up like that?” she mutters before sitting up properly.

[04:21:23] Crow (melchior.wardell) watches her as she is trying to process him sneaking up on her. It pulled his lips into that smile of amusement. Surely at her expense. “I don’t have to. But I hardly enjoy wearing bells and stuff.” he replied dryly. “And for some reason I think I might be out of business if everyone would hear me coming.” he added. It was of course very true. “Those that are startled often have something to hide. So what is it ? ” as he tipped his head towards the book she was ‘reading’.

[04:26:13] пαмıκα тσʟαп (dinara.braveheart) snorts softly and wraps the scarf a little tighter around her hair and shoulders. “I actually find the idea of bells on your shoes quite appealing,” she says, tucking in the end of the scarf and bending down to pick up the book. It was still that boring biography of the even more boring writer from Ko-ro-ba. “Or maybe he just fell asleep without meaning to,” she replies to his suggestion that she has something to hide. She places the book next to her on the swing seat. “What brings you to the inn?”

[04:29:24] Crow (melchior.wardell) studied the way she was trying to keep herself covered. As if the mere view on something that she tried to hide would turn him in stone or have him overrun by desire. While he was quite certain neither would be the case. But he wouldn’t speak of such matters. That was hers and only hers. If she did not trust him, he did not feel the need to win it. Perhaps there had been a moment where he had tried, but not now. “Nothing in particular. Does there need to be a reason?” he counters.

[04:35:10] пαмıκα тσʟαп (dinara.braveheart) shrugs her shoulders for a moment. “In my experience, men like you rarely do anything without a reason.” He won’t be able to guess that her meticulous care to cover as much of herself as possible has nothing to do with him, and it didn’t matter anyway. It was her way of navigating this society, and there will hardly be a situation in which she deviates from it. Many men may think of her as prudish, snobby, high-maintenance, or something similar. She accepts this without setting the record straight, because setting the record straight would be far worse than the reputation she’s earned through her behavior.

[04:38:48] Crow (melchior.wardell) nodded thoughtful “Rarely.” he replied. “So not never.” he stated as to use her own words. “I like to think we are hard to predict.” he would look over the water and turned more. “So what are you reading?” he asks again tipping his head to the book. Perhaps she might be surprised by his interest in books. He had a disguise for a long time in which scribe work was part of it. He had truly enjoyed learning the trade and reading. It gave him a lot of insights in the Gorean Society.

[04:43:03] пαмıκα тσʟαп (dinara.braveheart) can’t help but roll her eyes, a rare occurrence, as he nitpicks her words, and smiles for a moment: “Rare enough that no one would expect you to do it.” She turns her gaze to the book and takes a deep breath: “I promised a friend I’d read this book. It’s a biography of a Scribe who thinks he’s very important. She’s fascinated by the man, while I find him deadly boring.” Her pen pal gushes about this man, and she’s let herself be talked into reading the book so she can discuss it with her. And she regretted it after just the first four pages.
[04:47:10] Crow (melchior.wardell) didn’t see the eye roll and yet could still hear it in her voice. But he wouldn’t dive into it. He wasn’t here to woo her, win her heart or have her move to his natural charm. “Hmm… ” he replied. “Strange … there are some new merchants in Valaris. Book merchants. One is now imprisoned due to a theft.” he shared. “They had books that were quite hilarious. About this writer that feels himself an expert on so many levels. I am trying to remember the name of the writer. But I am quite sure it is of Ar.” he mused. “So who is this writer and man that thinks himself so important?” it was his ‘odd’ way to keep the conversation going.

[05:07:37] пαмıκα тσʟαп (dinara.braveheart) raises her eyebrows when he mentions the booksellers in Valaris. “For theft? What did he steal, anyway? Words?” A bad joke, admittedly. She picks up the book and holds it out to him. Perhaps in the hope that he’ll take it and thus spare her the task of having to read it. That way, at least she’d have an excuse for her pen pal—after all, who would dare contradict an assassin if he simply claimed a book as his own? Well, Namika, perhaps—if it weren’t for the fact that it’s THIS book. The fact that he doesn’t want to win her heart is probably the best thing that could happen to both of them. “I didn’t know him before. He calls himself Writeous Wright.” She can barely hide a broad grin.

[05:14:39] Crow (melchior.wardell) shrugged “I am unsure as to what happened with these book salesmen.” he replied. “I guess there will be a trail.” he reasons. “I haven’t truly invested much in the events as other business kept me from it. But I am sure Vesper might be able to tell more.” as she offered the book he would approach and take it. His hand over the cover as if to feel the words before he would open it and started to read. A faint lift of one brow betraying his amusement at her joke. “Words are often more dangerous than steel,” he replied. His finger would move along one of the sentences in the book. “Oh boy … ‘I do not write for those who merely read; I write for the rare minds capable of understanding why I was destined to be remembered.’ … The man is truly full of himself.” as he moved further in the book and read ‘Others put words upon parchment. I put immortality between its lines.’ He shook his head “I understand why you fell asleep while reading. If that is what I just saw a moment ago?”

[05:18:51] пαмıκα тσʟαп (dinara.braveheart) leans back slightly as he actually takes the book from her and smiles faintly as he begins to read individual sentences from the masterpiece: “I’d say, we’re all doomed if this man gains even a shred of power in any city.” She struggles to suppress a giggle. “He’ll throw feathers at us if we fall asleep every time he gives a speech.” At his last sentence, she raises her gloved hands as if surrendering. “I refuse to testify. In the end, the scribe finds out about it and uses it against me.”

[06:33:03] Crow (melchior.wardell) would stare at the page for a moment longer, his expression becoming increasingly blank as each sentence was read. Eventually he would slowly lower the book, looking at Namika with the solemnity of a man considering an exceptionally serious matter. “Feathers.” His gaze would return to the book. “Apparently, we are dealing with a man who has discovered the most terrifying weapon known to civilization.” He would turn another page, his mouth twitching faintly. “The written word.” At her declaration of refusing to testify, he would give a quiet snort. “Wise. I have no intention of becoming involved in a conspiracy against a man armed with feathers and a scribe.” He would close the book and offer it back to her. “Keep it. Clearly, it is dangerous contraband.” A brief pause, his eyes narrowing with amusement. “And should Writeous Wright ever acquire power in a city I must hunt, I shall deny ever having met you.”

[06:38:44] пαмıκα тσʟαп (dinara.braveheart) moves her upper body so she can watch him as he examines the pages of the book. As he speaks, she struggles to maintain a serious expression. Every now and then, an amused chuckle can be heard, which only dies down when he hands the book back to her. Reluctantly, her hand reaches out, while the veil moves slightly as she exhales. “Damn, and I thought I was rid of it.” She had seriously considered burning it, but she probably would have had a hard time explaining that. The excuse with the assassin would have been much more believable. “Can we hire those booksellers to steal it?” She probably isn’t really serious about that question, but she fears she’ll come down with sleeping sickness if she’s forced to keep reading this trash.

[06:43:14] Crow (melchior.wardell) would watch the reluctant hand reclaim the book, the faintest smirk touching his mouth at her apparent disappointment. “Hire the booksellers to steal a book?” he would ask, as though genuinely considering the proposal. He would fold his arms and give the matter a thoughtful look. “An elegant plan. Though I suspect they would charge you twice. Once for stealing it…” His eyes would settle on the book. “…and again for the trauma of having to look at it.” He would lean slightly closer, lowering his voice as if offering a serious piece of professional advice. “Alternatively, leave it somewhere unattended. Surely there is at least one illiterate man in Gor or the Inn with sufficiently poor judgment to take it.” A brief pause. “Then you can honestly tell your pen pal that it was stolen.” His expression would remain perfectly straight, though the amusement in his eyes would betray him. “And if anyone asks, I know nothing about feathers, although my name might tell you otherwise.”

[06:50:33] пαмıκα тσʟαп (dinara.braveheart) furrows her brow as he speaks. In fact, she’s seriously considering his suggestion. Her eyes drop to the book, which she finally sets down beside her and lets go of, as if she’d burned her fingers on it. “Hopefully, that illiterate guy will never find anyone to read it to him.” When he brings up the feathers and his name, the look in her eyes changes for a few heartbeats. She had never thought about it before. Feather. Crow. Why had this never occurred to her? She lets out a short, desperate laugh from her throat and then shakes her head. To clear her thoughts, she turns her upper body back so she can look out over the water. She can only hope that he doesn’t even begin to suspect the double meaning behind his words. “I think I need to have a serious talk with my pen pal. And strongly advise her to develop a better taste in books.”

[06:56:02] Crow (melchior.wardell) would notice the brief change in her eyes, though he would not immediately give it meaning. His gaze would linger on her for a heartbeat before returning to the water, allowing the moment to pass without pressing her. “A wise course of action,” he would say, settling back. “Though I suspect your pen pal’s taste may already be beyond saving.” A faint smirk would appear. “As for the book, I would recommend you keep it far away from any open flame. Not because of the book itself, but because if it catches fire, someone might assume the writing is flammable.” He would let the silence linger for a moment before adding, almost casually, “And if she refuses your advice, you can always send her a better book.” His eyes would shift briefly toward Namika. “Preferably one without feathers.”

[07:06:02] пαмıκα тσʟαп (dinara.braveheart) Despite her thoughts about feathers and crows, she can’t help but laugh, and her shoulders relax for a moment. “I’ll do my best to convince her that other works are more readable than this garbage.” She desperately needs to get away from this topic. Her past has suddenly become far too present—more than she’d like. “If you find out what the bookseller stole or his name, I’d appreciate it if you’d pass that information along to me. Maybe I know him.” In fact, that possibility isn’t entirely far-fetched; after all, she, too, buys her books from various dealers, and so far she’s considered them all reasonably trustworthy.

[07:12:27] Crow (melchior.wardell) would give a small nod, accepting the request without much ceremony. “If I learn his name, you will be the first to know.” He would glance once toward the discarded book, then back toward the water. “Though if you recognize him, I would advise against asking whether he still has the book. We have already established that its contents may be hazardous.” A faint smirk would return. “As for what the thief stole…” He would shrug slightly. “That is something I would like to know myself. A bookseller who steals ought to have a particularly interesting reason for doing so.” His gaze would settle briefly on her, observant but not pressing. “And if you happen to discover something about him through your own dealers, you can always tell me. Consider it an exchange of information.” He would pause, then add dryly, “A much more useful exchange than feathers.” now a far more sharper glance was given. Crow was to old to not pick up small signals. But it mattered little to which past she held. He himself had one too, which could very much be held against him.

[07:18:30] пαмıκα тσʟαп (dinara.braveheart) was able to handle the exchange of information. That was something she’d probably done many times before. Just as much as keeping quiet about the clients here in the Inn. She gathers information and passes it on when necessary; otherwise, she keeps quiet about it. When he uses the term “feathers” again, her fingers tense briefly before she turns her gaze to him on her right. “I’m expecting another merchant for parchment and books soon. I’ll see if anything is known in his circles.” Rumors would likely start circulating as soon as word got out that one of her merchants had been arrested for theft. And she was grateful for the distraction from her thoughts. The forest was close by, her past even closer, and none of it should really make her nervous. Yet it did. Her only luck was that her darkest past remained where she had buried it emotionally—far, far away

[07:25:30] Crow (melchior.wardell) would notice the brief tension in her fingers this time, though his expression would remain unchanged. He would not comment on it. Instead, he would simply nod, accepting the information as readily as he would any other piece of intelligence. “Then listen carefully when your merchant arrives,” he would say. “Merchants hear more than they realize. Especially when something unusual happens in their trade.” His gaze would drift toward the forest for a moment before returning to the water. “If there is a name attached to the theft, or a reason for it, pass it along. Rumors are rarely useless. They simply need to be separated from the truth.” A faint, almost knowing smile would touch his lips. “And I promise not to mention feathers again.” He would pause. “For at least a few minutes.” The quiet amusement in his voice would make it clear he had noticed her reaction, but he would leave it there, giving her the courtesy of not asking questions she clearly did not wish to answer.

[07:37:56] пαмıκα тσʟαп (dinara.braveheart) leans her back against the backrest of the swing while he speaks. Every now and then she nods slightly. “Of course,” she replies to his remark that she should pass on the information. When he promises not to mention feathers for a few moments, a slightly annoyed and exasperated groan escapes her: “Are you always so… unpleasant?,” she mutters quietly. Of course, she had noticed the amusement in his tone, and she wasn’t exactly thrilled to be adding to it. Her arms cross over her chest, as if she were using them as a shield to protect herself. An unconscious movement. And if she were watching herself from the outside, she’d probably shake her head at it.

[07:42:49] Crow (melchior.wardell) would glance at her crossed arms, then back to her face. For once, the amusement in his expression would soften rather than sharpen. “Only when people make it so easy,” he would answer, entirely without apology. He would settle back, leaving a comfortable amount of distance between them. His eyes would briefly move toward the water before returning to her. “But no. Not always.” A beat of silence. “Sometimes I am considerably worse.” The corner of his mouth would lift, just enough to make it clear he was deliberately provoking her. Yet he would not pursue the matter further. He had noticed the defensive gesture, and unlike some, he had no need to expose every weakness simply because he had seen it. “Besides,” he would add more quietly, “if I intended to be unpleasant, you would not have to wonder whether I was being so. Some suggests it comes with the trade.”

[07:49:54] пαмıκα тσʟαп (dinara.braveheart) takes a deep breath. “That’s what I was afraid of,” she replies dryly to his remark that he’s sometimes even worse. Her arms relax and her hands rest loosely in her lap. “Your profession makes you uncomfortably inscrutable.” Her gaze fixes on his face. “But I’m glad I’m amusing you.” Her voice now takes on a noticeably more relaxed tone, as if she isn’t taking herself too seriously right now. “I’m slowly realizing why you aren’t allowed to have companions. You’d drive them all crazy.” Laugh lines now form around her eyes—the ones that always appear when she grins behind her veil. Of course, she knows the real reason for the restriction, but even she sometimes feels the need to tease someone. In this case, him and his caste.

[07:59:00] Crow (melchior.wardell) would give a quiet, almost amused exhale at that, his gaze remaining steadily on her. “Inscrutable is useful,” he would say. “Especially when people insist on trying to discover what lies underneath.” At her remark about companions, one eyebrow would rise. “Drive them all crazy?” He would consider that for a moment, apparently giving the accusation far more thought than it deserved. “Perhaps. But that would suggest they stayed long enough to find out.” The faint smile would return. “And you seem remarkably comfortable teasing an assassin about his lack of companions.” His eyes would narrow slightly with playful warning. “Either you are very brave, Innkeeper… or you have finally developed poor judgment.” He would let the silence sit for a heartbeat before adding dryly, “I once had a companion. Before all this black. Now I am sure she was at times pushed to that fine line of insanity. But I doubt it was my undoing.”he jested.

[08:06:39] пαмıκα тσʟαп (dinara.braveheart) Now she really has to laugh. For real. Spontaneously: “People have said both of those things about me. Depending on who you ask, some would say I’m braver than is good for me, while others would surely swear I have the worst judgment of character on this planet.” Her laughter slowly dies down before she shakes her head. “Even if most men deny it, without us women, you’d all be lost,” she grins broadly from behind her veil. In fact, she probably doesn’t mean just the companions, or free women in general. Her past has also taught her that most men would wander through the world hopelessly confused without their slaves. “So I’d guess she didn’t push you into the darkness. She was probably more like one of those who held the light.”

[08:12:21] Crow (melchior.wardell) ‘s expression would grow quieter at that last observation, the teasing ease fading just slightly. He would study her for a moment before looking back toward the water. “Perhaps,” he would say simply. “Some people do not push you into darkness. They simply stand close enough to it that you remember there is still a choice.” He would pause, then glance toward her again. “And perhaps that is why they are harder to forget.” A faint smirk would return, rescuing the moment from becoming too serious. “As for women keeping men from becoming hopelessly lost…” His brow would rise. “I have met enough men to know you may have a point.” He would incline his head toward her. “But I would be careful saying that too loudly. Some men have fragile reputations to maintain.”

[08:23:13] пαмıκα тσʟαп (dinara.braveheart) studies his face intently as his expression changes for a moment, before a smile returns to his lips. “Oh, don’t worry. I’ve certainly encountered fragile male egos before,” she says, also turning her gaze briefly to the water. “And men who think they have to give something up because it gets too close to them.” Her eyes flicker slightly as her brain plays a trick on her, and smoke seems to form on the water before her eyes. Her hand rises, wiping across her eyelids, before she looks back at the water, which is washing up onto the shore in calm waves WITHOUT any smoke. “Maybe that’s why I find the dark shadows so much more pleasant than life in a city.”

[08:26:58] Crow (melchior.wardell) would notice the movement of her hand and the momentary shift in her expression, but he would not immediately ask what she had seen. His gaze would remain on the water for several heartbeats, giving her the space to collect herself. “Cities are loud,” he would say eventually. “Too many eyes. Too many voices. Everyone wanting something from everyone else.” His arms would rest loosely against his sides. “The shadows ask for considerably less.” He would turn his head toward her, studying her calmly. “But they have their own price.” A faint, knowing smile would touch his lips. “People often think darkness means hiding. It doesn’t. Sometimes it simply means you can finally stop pretending to be something you’re not.” He would let that linger before looking back toward the water. “Much depends with whom you are in a city. Perhaps in time you might find someone that even brings calmness in your home when the city is a blaze.”

[08:34:20] пαмıκα тσʟαп (dinara.braveheart) nods as he describes life in the city. When he mentions the price of the shadows, she turns her head back toward him and looks at him silently for a moment before her voice breaks the silence: “Until now, the price has been affordable.” She would probably feel differently if she thought her life were in serious danger. But that hadn’t been the case here yet. “I don’t get the impression that there will ever be anyone again who could make life in a city bearable for me.” Her shoulders rise slightly. She’s probably too young to even consider wanting to stay alone for the rest of her life. But that’s actually her plan. At least for now.

[08:39:33] Crow (melchior.wardell) would study her quietly, his expression giving away little as he considers her words. There would be no immediate joke this time. “Affordable,” he would repeat softly. “That is usually how the price begins.” His gaze would return to the water. “Until one day you discover that you have been paying with things you never realized you possessed.” He would pause, then look back toward her. “As for there being no one capable of making a city bearable…” A faint shrug. “You cannot know that. You simply haven’t met that one yet.” There would be no attempt to convince her, only a simple statement. “People are remarkably good at appearing when you have stopped looking for them.” His mouth would curve into the slightest smile. “And if nobody does, then you have at least chosen your solitude rather than allowing someone else to choose it for you.” He would lean back, his attention settling once more on the calm water. “That is not the worst way to live.”

[08:46:27] пαмıκα тσʟαп (dinara.braveheart) ‘s eyes flicker for a moment when he mentions that the price usually starts that way. For a split second, her thoughts race—is there anything she should have kept in mind? But she still couldn’t quite put her finger on it. As he continues speaking, she waves her hand dismissively. “Well, then I have nothing to fear. I’ve stopped looking for it for far too long for anyone to show up now.” That was her way of dealing with the solitude she’d chosen for herself—with the disappointments of the past and the secrets that had grown out of them. She follows him and turns her gaze back to the water as well. “And if it gets too lonely, I’ll just talk to the Vulos,” she says with a slight smile. “They argue back, too, but I have the advantage of not understanding them.”

[08:49:49] Crow (melchior.wardell) would glance toward her at the mention of the Vulos, and for a moment his expression would remain perfectly serious. “An excellent arrangement,” he would say. “They argue. You don’t understand them. Therefore, you are always right.” The faintest smirk would appear. “I can see why you prefer them to people.” His gaze would drift back toward the water, though his voice would become slightly quieter. “And perhaps that is the advantage of speaking to creatures that cannot understand you. They cannot ask questions about the things you would rather leave buried.” He would let the thought settle before adding, dryly, “Although if one of them starts answering you in perfect Gorean, I recommend leaving immediately.” A pause. “Either you have finally lost your mind…” His eyes would flick toward her. “…or the Vulo has learned something you should be worried about.” with that he would dip his head “And on that note. I have to leave. Have a good day, Innkeeper. And be watcheful about those vulo’s.” he grinned there and headed off

The lighter path

Posted in Black Caste on August 22, 2026 by crow1971

[04:05:17] Osric Mahalah (salagudin): Osric smiled toward Kaci, understanding more than most what a dark past could teach a man – “Those of us who’ve walked darker roads can sometimes serve the light better fer knowing exactly what waits beyond it, Kaci. One thing in me has never changed – loyalty tae those I pledge me steel, care and love tae.” His expression became more solemn – “I know the people of Skull Island well. Part of me history was written there, and I’ll nae deny it. But the Commander convinced me there was another road worth walking, and I freely swore a new oath as a Warrior of Valaris. I carry that oath with new purpose now.” His gaze moved between Rex and Kaci – “Me fiercest weapon isnae the sword at me hip – it’s loyalty. Skull Island already knows that about Osric Mahalah. Me brothers and the people of Valaris will learn it soon enough.”

[04:08:47] Crow (melchior.wardell) was a man with reason. Nothing was done just because he felt like it. Although the regular fuck of a slave, might be considered such. If he would fly his tarn, it was with the reason of the benefits of being up in the sky. He hadn’t yet seen many of the men in the air. So he wondered how many tarnsmen they would have. Not that it mattered to him. Even if the city was defenseless, it mattered little. The only thing that would come of it is – more work. He had seen the man in the sand and had been curious. He had not seen another that would test the mans steel. But as he flew lower he picked up the words of the man in the sand. And only now seeing that there were others he spoke to. Ironic that the conversation was about the darker roads and how they can serve the light. It was exactly what Crow believed. What he lived. HE could see the tapestry on the right side while others only noted the lose threads on the other side and judged him because of that.

[04:10:22] Kaci Mercury (kaci.claw) paused for a moment, stiffening ever so slightly as Osric spoke. She took a moment or two before she answered, sometimes that was needed. “Well, I do not speak ill of all the people, nor do I speak ill of Harry Horchester. But I have had several meetings with him, in the past he has made it clear he intends to capture me. maybe he has a new fancy now though, but I am not sure I will eve fully trust that man and his motivations.” she ended there, although there was a lot more that could clearly be seen between the lines that Kaci had spoken. She glanced to Rex, knowing Rex had thwarted one possible attempt at Port Talis. She then glance dup, stepping back as she saw the tarn approaching. “Well, I guess someone knows how to make an entrance.” she chuckled.

[04:14:33] Rex Mercury listened to Osric and Kaci speaking to one another, smiling at Kaci when she looked at him. Proud of his companion as always, his hand still on the small of her back as it moved slowly up and down as he listened. “I feel like this city will do well, the caste as well.” Looking up hearing the sound of wings or doing his best to look up at the man on top of his tarn. “It does seem so.” he agreed with Kaci and smiled. “Tal sir.” he called out to the man on the tarn before looking back to Osric. “I feel any path we lead will either teach us or not, it is our job to take it as something to learn from, good and bad times do that to us. Make us stronger, most of the time.” Chuckled some and smiled.

[04:16:44] Osric Mahalah (salagudin): Osric had noticed the tarn before Kaci finished speaking, his eyes tracking its approach while the rider remained impossible to identify – “Harry’s intentions are worth remembering, Kaci, but nae judging before he acts. Loyalty doesnae require blindness – it requires vigilance.” His attention snapped fully upward as the tarn crossed above them without warning. Three bolts were already in his hand and another seated loudly into the crossbow, the deliberate sound announcing that Valaris’ Captain was ready – “Interesting. Whoever rides that beast has reached our airspace without challenge or warning.” His stance settled, crossbow held ready but not yet raised – “News travels fast when something is worth hearing… but right now I care less about who rides that tarn than how easily they reached us. – “Rex the Commander needs tae know we’ve just discovered another hole in our security.”

[04:20:19] Crow (melchior.wardell) was a good observer and listener. It was his trade to know and to see things. It was far more extended than any kind of murder. The whispers that fed him, made him powerful. Surely as he was a Master in diplomatic warfare. Perhaps his upbringing as a tarnsman destined to become Ubar, was not completely lost to the assassin. The name Harry gave him a raised brow. The man was a bastard. A greedy one too. It had always surprised that his name was never paid for. He wouldn’t truly interfere in the conversation. It was not his. But than he was addressed. His tarn held him steady as it flapped his wings as to keep a steady pose within the air. “Greetings.” he offered in return. The voice one of age and experience. Perhaps even with that edge of authority he had gained over time. He had seen the bolts loaded and he grinned. “I fear your position allows me to be quickly out of view …. No need to be afraid, Rarius. I have no ill intentions.” he chuckled darkly. “My tarn needs to simply spreads its wings.”

[04:25:47] Kaci Mercury (kaci.claw) raised her eyes ot the tarn, they always unnerved her more so when they came from nowhere, she decided she should shush up with the words she was speaking, the man may be friendly but even the friendliest of people had allies they kept quiet. She took a few more steps back. “Yes, definitely a tarn issue here.” she gestured and laughed. “If you wish Sir, you could come down and join us.”

[04:27:29] Rex Mercury listened and watch as Osric pulled his crossbow out and began to load it. Though he figured if the man was going to attack, he would have already done so. But his hand would move to his bow just in case it was needed as he stood watch and listened to the man as he spoke to Osric. Nodding in agreement with Osric and also Kaci as they spoke of the tarn issue. “I agree. The city does seem to have some things that need to be dealt with.” At Kacis’ offering for him to come down and join them, figuring that was a good idea to see who this man was as they could not at the time.

[04:28:46] Tira (mas6664) slips back quietly but there was a shadow on the sands and she looked up seeing the tarn, the dappled colouring on its underside, fascinating, she loved to ride tarns but they can be very scary when on the ground , she stays low on her knees for now in case is desended

[04:31:43] Osric Mahalah (salagudin): Osric kept the crossbow ready, eyes following the tarn rather than accepting the spectacle at face value – “Nae, Kaci. I dinnae think that entrance was about meeting us. A man seeking conversation lands at the gate and walks inside. Flying unchallenged over Valaris shows him what our defences can and cannae stop.” – His gaze swept the open sky – “I’ve yet tae see a Valaris Warrior patrolling these skies on a war tarn. We have baskets carrying people upward, yet apparently nothing guarding what comes down. That’s nae merely a tarn problem, Rex… that’s a weakness, and someone just demonstrated it beautifully.” – Osric heard the age and confidence in the rider’s voice, but neither loosened his stance nor lowered the crossbow. He shifted several paces, seeking a clearer angle while keeping Kaci and Rex behind the line of fire – “Afraid? Nae, stranger. Merely prepared.” His eyes measured tarn and rider together, calculating distance and movement – “Ye may be quick enough tae vanish from sight, aye – but even a tarn must spread its wings before it leaves, and perhaps the Priest Kings would favour one of me bolts finding beast or rider before then.” Still he did not fire, discipline holding where instinct might once have acted – “Ye claim peaceful intent, so I’ll grant ye the chance tae prove it. Take yer tarn and leave Valaris airspace. Return through our skies unannounced again and I’ll consider the act hostile.” His crossbow remained ready as he watched the stranger – “Danger seems tae creep closer tae this city by the day. Captain Osric intends tae make certain it learns where our boundaries lie.”

[04:33:13] Crow (melchior.wardell) grinned at the invite, but shook his head. He had no intent to interrupt any conversation nor intrude there where he wasn’t wanted. He was man of caste. A man that would stick to rules, regulations. And of course his codes. That those were of murder was well known. “I doubt I would bring much ‘fun’ to the conversation, lady.” he called out. “We are not known to socialize.” he stated in truth. Of course he wasn’t a fool and ready for if a shot would be fired. His tarn was well trained and a loyal companion for ages now. A small push with his foot, or a small tug to the reigns would have her instantly take flight again. “I will let you be … and no need to thank me for those insights when it comes to security.” with that he even laughed. Those that stated Killers had no sense of humor – clearly had not met him. “Be well.” he offered while he would pull the reigns and have the tarn take flight once more. Perhaps only having a feather float down to land before the slave. The words of the rarius were noted but not addressed. Perhaps it was a case of – having to be one to understand one – and yet …. his light was different than his.

Second serve

Posted in Black Caste, Mastery on July 24, 2026 by crow1971

[06:08] “46” chewed her lip “There is an inn, Master…but I don’t know where it is yet. I’m still getting used to the city. I was exploring when I came in here and found you, Master.”

[06:10] Crow (melchior.wardell) stepped into the tavern. His keen eyes would drift from one to the other. He held pause without shame or the intent to hide his scrutiny. The man was seasoned in his profession and as he moved on could tell that he was fit, agile and very very aware of his surroundings. He noted the man at the counter and would take a position where none would surprise him in his back. “Tal all.” his voice dark and moody. As if for once his slave hadn’t completely satisfied him in the evening. Of course such was not the case – but one could wonder such.

[06:10] Storm (celticstorm.thor) enters the tavern removing the coin from the previous nights to take to the Administration Building. Before Leaving “Tal warrior and travelers, please sit and perhaps one of our finest slave girl shall dance for thee!” nods out of respect and makes his way out

[06:16] Mávur con Ar (fallega) pants softly and pulls three copper coins from his pocket to place them on the counter. “You’d better get to know the city quickly, you little Cosian Sleen.” And just like that, she’d already been given a nickname by him. He spins the last copper coin so that it whirls around its own axis in front of him on the counter. He turns his head when he hears a gruff voice behind him. He sizes up the man dressed in dark clothing carefully before returning his greeting. “Tal Killer.” Respect, but no fear, rings in his voice. He knew this caste from the time before they tried to take over Ar.

[06:16] “46” clammed up as Storm appeared, her head low, shoulders rounded slightly as the man clearly terrified her. She was a much different beast than the woman he’d met the day prior, clearly having had the delusions of release stripped from her mind.

And then just as quickly as he came, he was gone. Another took his place though and she’d turn her head for a moment to Crow “Tal, Master” she said quietly, She certainly wouldn’t be dancing that day, A foot was bandaged and she was clearly favoring one side of her body, a slight lean in her posture. “May I get you anything to drink, Master? I don’t know much yet…but I can work it out, Master.”

[06:19] “46” heard the name he called her, biting back a comment and simply going with “Yes, Master.” was all she said in response quietly.

[06:21] Crow (melchior.wardell) ’s sharp, dark eyes swept over the scene in the tavern with practiced, lethal efficiency. He didn’t miss the subtle exchange between Mávur con Ar and the slave, with the spinning copper coin. Nor did he miss the shift in the girl’s posture. She was a bruised, bandaged shadow of whatever spirit she had carried the day before, clearly battered by the reality of her collar. When Mávur offered his respectful greeting Crow gave the man a short nod of acknowledgment. He didn’t order her to jump to her feet, nor did he demand a dance from a girl. “Black wine,” he commanded simply.”

[06:28] Mávur con Ar (fallega) turns his gaze back to the red-haired slave, and the corners of his mouth lift slightly when she makes no verbal response to her new nickname. Too bad—he almost wished she’d put up at least a little resistance. He turns to the man whose presence hardly anyone seemed to enjoy. “I assume men like you have keen observational skills. Have you happened to notice an inn where we could stop for the night?”

[06:31] “46” swallowed nervously as she felt the killer’s gaze fall over her. They had always made her quite nervous. More so now that she didn’t have any protections. As the man gave his order, she’d nod “Yes, Master. First or Second?” she asked, slowly standing with a slight whimper of pain as she moved to wash her hands, ears pricked to hear his response.

She believed she’d picked up on the man’s accent that had insulted her, guessing where he was from and still having to resist very strongly to say something back to him.

[06:34] Crow (melchior.wardell) didn’t answer immediately. He waited until the girl retrieved his cup of black wine, watching out of the corner of his eye to ensure her gait held steady despite the bandaged foot. Only after answering “Second.”, did he turn his attention to Mávur, his expression unreadable. A low, dry rumble sounded in the back of his throat, the closest Crow ever came to a chuckle. “Observational skills are a requirement of survival in my trade,” he stated. “Especially in a Port where half the patrons are looking for a bed and the other half are looking for an unguarded throat.” he would tip his head towards the West “You’ll find the inn up the stairs”

[06:39] Mávur con Ar (fallega) watches the girl just as Crow does, though his gaze isn’t nearly as menacing. She’d just had the misfortune of piquing his interest when she revealed where she was from. His light-colored eyes scrutinize her openly before he turns away his almost youthful face as Crow explains the direction to the inn. He nods slightly. “My Thanks. A bed will do for me. At most, my throat needs to be moistened from the inside” a poor attempt at a joke. Of course, he knows he wouldn’t be making bad jokes anymore if the killer had it in for him. Besides, there was hardly anyone who would put him on a list. Except, perhaps, his books, which he torments with his fingers.

[06:40] “46” nodded “Yes, Master” she found a mug, before moving to the hearth in the corner, taking the ladle and dipping it into the pot of black wine before pouring it carefully into the mug. She hung the ladle up and looked about her, soo finding the sugar and milk. She added a spoon of yellow and a spoon of white before mixing it into the small cup, then topped it up with bosk milk and stirred it. With that complete she’d limp back to the man and carefully held the cup with both hands as she stiffly moved to her knees, offering him the small cup. It was far from the best offering in the world, the slave extremely fresh and not really knowing how to do it properly. She was nervous to be so close to him as well, only adding to it.

[06:44] Crow (melchior.wardell) s hardened features at Mávur’s clumsy attempt at tavern wit. “Then stick to moistening your throat and stay out of the dark alleys,” he replied. His dark, sharp gaze flicked back toward “46” for a brief second, noting her cautious, quiet movements as she tended to her serve. But when he noted what she served him a brow arched. It gave his face that dangerous edge. As if a snake would lift its head to slither before it would strike. “I asked for a second serve. You deliver me a first. Do I look like the type for sugar and milk?”

[06:49] Mávur con Ar (fallega) nods slightly at Crow’s words, “I’ll take that advice to heart,” and says nothing more. His eyes are already back on the slave girl, who is now limping back toward Crow and sinking to her knees there rather inelegantly. The corners of his mouth turn up. He’d like to teach her the proper posture. The feuds between the cities didn’t stop at female slaves, after all. Too bad for her. When Crow complains about his drink, his eyebrows rise. He notices the change in the man’s expression and almost feels a little sorry for the slave girl.

[06:50] “46” froze as she realized she’d mixed it up, beginning to tremble with fear. Her chest began to rise and fall faster, and she’d look down “I-I’m sorry, Master. I mixed it up…M-May I go and bring you the proper drink, Master?” tshe stammered, clear terror in her tone as a feeling of dread fell over her. She could feel Mayur’s eyes on her too, and a little bit of anger at herself popped up too, that she’d made such a basic mistake in front of him, especially after his earlier comment.

[06:55] Crow (melchior.wardell) didn’t shout. He didn’t slam his hand against the counter. In truth, the absolute, deadly silence that fell over him was far more terrifying than any raised voice. His dark, unreadable eyes remained fixed on “46” as she froze on her knees, her frame trembling under the suffocating weight of her mistake. He let the silence stretch, taking a brief, chilling beat to let the dread settle deep into her bones. “Fear makes for careless hands, girl,” he stated with cold, absolute authority. “And careless hands lead to wasted effort.” He took a slow step closer, his towering frame casting a dark, heavy shadow over her kneeling form. “You will not go back to fetch another cup,” he commanded. “You will sit in that mistake, control your breathing, and remember the taste of your own error.”

[06:59] Mávur con Ar (fallega) now turns so that he can look at Crow and the girl. The man’s reaction was unexpected. Most of the men he’d encountered in taverns during his travels would have roared or immediately drawn their whips. This man, however, seemed alarmingly calm, which probably didn’t make the situation any less dangerous. He watches the girl’s reaction closely, her trembling, her tense posture. He almost leaned back, but manages just in time to grab hold of the edge of the bar. He’d momentarily forgotten that the stool has no backrest. “Damn” he mutters in a deep voice and straightens up as if nothing had happened.

[07:02] “46” shrank beneath that gaze and the heavy silence, suffocating her like a thick smoke. Her chest rose and fell faster, shallower, close to hyperventilating from the terror and dread she felt. Her shoulders hunched without her realizing, her face paling beneath the killer’s gaze as he moved closer.

She didn’t notice the Arian’s blunder, the slave’s focus pinned beneath the killer’s calm but dangerous demeanor. As she heard his command she’d pant out “Y-yes, Master.” she stammered and she’d try to focus on her breathing, although she’d only be able to get half a proper deep breath before it began to hurt her ribs and back, the slightest of wheezes heard as she took them. Almost inaudible.

[07:06] Crow (melchior.wardell) ’s dark, unblinking eyes caught Mávur’s slight fumble. He didn’t laugh. He didn’t even shift his footing. A faint, barely perceptible tightening around the corners of his eyes was the only indication that he had noted the clumsy moment. “The stools here are built for alert men, traveler,” he stated. He turned his full attention back down to “46,” who remained frozen beneath the weight of her error. The shadow of his imposing frame stayed fixed over her, a quiet, immovable pillar of discipline. “Control the panic before your lungs fail you, girl,” he commanded, Slow. In through the nose, out through the mouth. Do not force a deep breath.” the mere suggestion seemed to be a life sentence if she would not comply. “Only when you stop trembling you are allowed to lift yourself and grab me the right black wine. But it will not be paid. I am sure there are ways you can compensate the Innkeepers loss by your error.”

[07:10] Mávur con Ar (fallega) ‘s eyes rest on the pitiful object at Crow’s feet. He doesn’t interfere. No Gorean man would interfere with the punishment of a slave girl, not even his own, unless the property were rendered useless. Here, however, the consequence is likely to be truly instructive. Of course, the Killer had noticed and commented on his little blunder. He grins slightly, just as young men tend to do; “uncomfortable” is all he says now. However, he is well aware of the subtle dig. He was young, but not stupid. And above all, not stupid enough to believe he could measure up to a killer’s attention to detail, wisdom, and life experience. Still, the way he treats the slave makes him almost likable.

[07:14] “46” noticed the wheezing, knowing she needed to speak to the physician soon, but right now…there were more pressing matters. Her head remained cow, but as she heard his words she’d start controlling it a bit better “Y-yes, Master.” she focused, following his instructions to the letter and before long, that trembling began to ebb, as the adrenaline in her system calmed.

After a long ehn she’d finally lift her head “May I fetch you a new cup of black wine please, Master?” she asked, almost calmly although it was still tinged with fear. She was still inwardly furious at herself as well, for making a mistake of one of the most basic things infront of the Arian, no doubt giving him something to laugh at later, perhaps…

[07:19] Crow (melchior.wardell) ’s sharp gaze lingered on “46” as her shallow breathing gradually steadied, matching the slow, measured rhythm he had demanded. The anger at herself was plain in her eyes but Crow cared little for slave pride. He cared for discipline and utility. A low, gravelly hum sounded in his chest as he looked down at her. “You may,” Crow permitted a little annoyed that he somewhat had to repeat himself. He took a step back to give her space to rise, his dark eyes shifting briefly toward Mávur con Ar. The young man’s slight grin and terse admission of the stool being uncomfortable had not gone unnoticed. Turning his focus back to the bar, Crow folded his arms across his chest, waiting with patient, unyielding vigilance as the girl moved to fetch the dark brew. “Be warned … with each mistake I become less forthcoming.”

[07:22] Mávur con Ar (fallega) ’s playing again with one of the coins still lying on the counter—the ones he used to pay for that awful-tasting Kalana. As the slave girl begins to control her breathing and the trembling finally subsides, so that she is actually able to speak a sentence without stumbling, his eyebrows rise again. “Interesting,” he murmurs deeply. If he could read the girl’s thoughts, he would probably tell her that he never mocks a mistake. Except for his own. He wasn’t cruel. He might treat her more strictly than others if she would belonged to him, simply because of her background. But he had never been cruel. He flips the coin again, and it makes the familiar sound of copper against wood.

[07:26] “46” tried to be more graceful in the way she stood, the way she’d seen slaves do in her past, but the stiffness of her body limited that. Still, it was clear she was putting effort into trying to being pleasing, especially after the huge mistake she’d made. She heard his warning and she’d reply softly “Thank you for your mercy, Master” before limping quite a bit faster than she had been before, clearly wanting to get him his drink back to him as quickly as she could behind the bar. She quickly washed her hands again, from under her nails to her wrists, before finding another small cup, placing the erroneous cup to the side and covering it with a cloth. She then limped to the hearth, ladling the fresh black wine into the small cup from the kettle.

She couldn’t read the man’s thoughts, nor have a feed with his, but she noticed he didn’t seem to be making fun of her or making a deal out of it.

She hung the ladle back up, then limped back to the warrior, the slave still paled as she offered him the cup “Blackwine, second slave, Master” she said quietly, hoping she would have satisfied him this time “I apologize again for the error, Master…”

[07:27] Nova Cane (elysiancynefin): as she knelt down and offered him the cup*

[07:30] Crow (melchior.wardell) ’s sharp, unblinking eyes tracked the metallic glint of the copper coin flipping against the worn wood of the bar. The rhythm of it, the flip, spin, slap, clack was the sound of a bored young man with coin in his pocket and time to kill, a combination that often invited trouble in a place like this Port. “Words like ‘interesting’ usually come right before a man spends money he shouldn’t, or buys trouble he doesn’t need, traveler,” When she returned, pale and breathless, offering the steaming cup with a quiet, submissive apology, he did not immediately take it. He let the heavy silence hang between them for a long, agonizing heartbeat, allowing her to feel the weight of the moment, before his hand reached out. His fingers brushed against hers, cold, steady, and unhurried as he took the clay mug from her grasp. “Your apology is heard, but it is no longer required. You made an error, you faced the consequences, and you corrected it. That is all that is required of you.” he stated to her as he dismissed her with a flick of his hand.

[07:37] Mávur con Ar (fallega) lifts his head as Crow speaks to him, and a wry grin appears on his face. “Those are probably very true words, Killer.” In fact, thoughts had begun to form in his mind that were probably nonsense. His eyes drift back to the girl, who is now preparing to hand Crow his drink. “Sometimes it’s better not to let the enemy into your bed,” he mutters briefly before sitting up straight and sliding the coins across the counter with much more energy. “I’m going to head out and look for the inn.” He reaches into his pocket once more and places a few more coins on the table. “Your drink’s on me, Killer. And no, that’s not a bribe. Just a thank-you for an interesting lesson.”

[07:39] “46” felt that long silence as he delayed his response, the slave, for a moment, trying to work out what she may have done wrong, before relief came at his words. “Yes, Master. Thank you for the lesson, Master.” she replied quietly. Then as he dismissed her she’d rise, looking at them both, she’d manage a sweeter, pleasant tone “I wish you well, Masters.” before she’d limp out towards the infirmary, glad the hide of hers that was still intact, had remained so.

[07:42] Crow (melchior.wardell) didn’t move. He simply stood, a towering, dark form, against the warm glow of the tavern hearth, watching the young man gather himself to depart. “The enemy in your bed is only dangerous if you close your eyes, traveler,” je responded “Keep your steel sharp and your eyes open, and no bed will ever become your grave.” He glanced down coin “I take no bribes, and I owe no debts,” he stated flatly, his tone measured and steady. As the young man turned toward the door, Crow took a slow, deliberate swallow from the cup. He watched the girl leave until her shadow faded. She had endured the test, held her tongue under the heavy weight of discipline, and ultimately remembered her training.

[07:44] Mávur con Ar (fallega) watches the limping slave girl walk away, and for a moment, she awakens the predatory instinct of a Gorean man within him. He can’t help but feel this way toward a woman from the city of his enemies. He growls softly, “Cosian Sleen,” before shrugging his shoulders and regaining a neutral expression. He turns to Crow and bows his head slightly. “Killer,” he says by way of farewell, then follows the slave girl out of the tavern. Only when he realizes that his steps are faster than usual—as if he were trying to catch up with her—does he slow down and snort. Once outside, he laughs briefly at himself before finally heading toward the inn ((thanks a lot for the RP, hope to see you soon :-)))

No Mercy Twice

[13:04:14] Crow (melchior.wardell) settled and simply observed and listens. He knew that Vesper as much as himself hardly ever repeated themselves and after the scene in Teletus he doubted Vesper was in the mood to be challenged. Surely now Betram did not seem to be where they both hoped to find him. The riddle of the missing tharlarions grew bigger by the ihn. “Again that is not the full story … now … you have been warned.” he simply stated as he would tip his head to Helga and ordered himself a milk.

[13:08:25] Hosokawa Kinsei – Vesper™ 細川金星 (razius) nodded slowly as Crow spoke. He had spent a good portion of the last 600 years watching how Crow worked. He’d been trained well by the man. He didn’t speak again….that was his first mercy given to the girl. Those who knew him best understand that a single mercy was never repeated twice. His eyes bore into her deeply as his fingers started to run a one two three four rhythm upon his fan.

[13:12:48] KeDjA (lilli.breda) lifts her head slightly when Crow’s voice rings out. Her eyes sparkle for a moment because he’s meddling again, making sure the situation could become even more unpleasant for her. As if he were enjoying it. She just couldn’t figure this man out. Cornered, she begins to interlace her fingers and turns her attention back to Vesper, who simply looks at her and remains silent. A few heartbeats pass before she continues hesitantly, “I’ve probably gone too far into the forest. The panthers… one of their arrows hit me.” It was stupid. She knew it herself. And that was probably why she’d simply wanted to keep quiet about it and had treated the wound herself as best she could. Unfortunately, she didn’t have any pants, so she couldn’t hide the bandage. Next time, she’ll just steal a pair of Crow’s pants. So.

[13:16:29] Crow (melchior.wardell) had received his milk when he listens to Kedja’s story. “Seems these panther girls are blindfolded and shoot randomly.” he stated. “Why aim on the knees ?” he pondered. He would take a good gulp of his milk. “So you only looked at it ? Did it penetrate ?” he asks matter of factly. The tone of his voice held little care although his questions could indicate otherwise. “If it did we might need to find a physician to look into it. Such wounds could fester and who might make me my black wine then ?”

[13:21:07] Hosokawa Kinsei – Vesper™ 細川金星 (razius) felt the pull happen and he looked out the door and just caught a flash of black and purple moving past. As Kedja finally replied, his hand moved from the fan. He spun in his tracks and he went to sit down next to Crow, “It’s good to know that those old stories still have weight…” he said of not having to repeat himself. “…I don’t like having to pay compensation needlessly.”

[13:21:35] Helga: Heya adventurer! The Inn is truly the best place to stay. Going further … I can’t say I ever saw someone return.

[13:23:45] KeDjA (lilli.breda) presses her lips together. “It’s just a small cut. There’s no need for a physician, and even if there were, you’d surely find a slave to prepare some black wine for you, Master.” Her green eyes darken slightly. It wasn’t that she considered herself irreplaceable. No, quite the opposite. It was the way he spoke that irritated her. Of course. Fire and oil. Although sometimes he acted like a bucket of cold water. Vesper’s insinuation makes her shudder briefly, and she has to pull herself together not to take a step back. She shifts her bare feet slightly, as if to keep herself rooted in place until he moves away from her. Only then do her shoulders drop again.

[13:27:36] Crow (melchior.wardell) nodded thoughtfully to Vesper. The man was right. The threat was often enough for others to fall in line. Although some might still be foolish enough to try. “Show me.” he commands the girl as he pointed beside him. “As you have been untruthful at the beginning it being nothing … and now it is already a cut.” he stated leaving nothing to guess as to his annoyance of it. “Why is it so difficult to be direct and speak your mind?” he muttured. “One moment she is all flash and fire and the next she tries to hide behind a tree and tries to convince us that she is merely its shadow.”

[13:32:40] Hosokawa Kinsei – Vesper™ 細川金星 (razius) looked over at Helga and ordered “Black wine and bread” before pointing in front of him, He had watched Kedja long enough now to make an assessment, but he did not speak it just yet. His eyes just continued to watch her to see if what she did next, whether it fit with the pattern.

[13:34:38] KeDjA (lilli.breda) snorts lightly, “because with you, you never know what you’re allowed to say… Master,” pausing briefly before the title. She always does that when anger starts to well up inside her. Of course, she could have told him everything right away, but everyone who knows her knows that she doesn’t take herself seriously enough. Not even when she’s hurt. It wasn’t anything dramatic; she won’t die from it—at least, that’s what the writer hopes—so she plays it down. And besides, it made her uncomfortable. Still, she gets moving. Maybe because of the threat earlier, maybe because of the anger in his voice. Or because she is a moth and he is the light. She plops down on her butt next to the bench so he can see her left leg.

[13:41:21] Crow (melchior.wardell) had not seen her limping so knew that nothing vital had been harmed, but still a wound by an arrow could become something lethal if not well cared for. “Well that is my propagative.” he commented as to why he could say and demand what he wishes. If the bond thought life was fair than she was surely mistaken, but if she thought it was fair for him – she too had it wrong. His hand although capable of murder could be tender and caring as he would slowly undo the bandages she had binded over her knee. Slowly revealing the wound that seemed indeed to be a minor cut. But still one he wished to clean “Helga can you bring me a bowl of fresh water and some fresh bandages ? Surely the inn has some kind of supply.” he suggested. He didn’t want to use his own as he was already in need for some supplies himself. These damned panther girls had been a pain in his arse too. “So … ” he started to assess. “I think you will live. ” he stated. “But it needs to be cleaned.” he stated. The blood on the bandage thankfully
old. There was no need for black pepper or anything to stop the bleeding. “So … that scroll … what can you tell us about it without of course messing with confidentiality. ” It was not meant to surpass that but there was a concern when it came to the Innkeeper. She was difficult but a woman with purpose.

[13:47:10] Helga: pauses, her heavy wooden tray tucked firmly under one massive arm. She wipes her brow with the back of a calloused hand, her piercing northern eyes darting between Crow and Vesper. A heavy, grim silence hangs over her for a moment before she sighs, the sound like a gust of wind through winter pines. “Water and bandages? Aye, I can fetch those.” she says, her voice a low, gravelly rumble. “But standard linen won’t mend the kind of stupidity that drives folk into those woods. I warned you. The trees have eyes, and they don’t belong to men.” She turns her stern gaze toward Vesper, planting her free hand heavily on her hip. “Bread I have. Fresh from the hearth. But black wine?” She lets out a dark, humorless scoff. “If you’re planning on bleeding out because you didn’t listen to an old woman’s warning, you’ll do it sober on my floor. Strong ale is what you’ll get to dull the pain, or nothing at all.” She leans in a bit closer, her shadow looming over your table. Her voice drops to a harsh whisper. “I heard what you said, bond. Shot by a panther girl, was it? If the forest-kin are hunting this close to the timberline, a bandage isn’t going to save any of us.” With a sharp nod, she turns on her heel, her heavy boots thudding against the floorboards as she heads toward the kitchen.

[13:51:26] Hosokawa Kinsei – Vesper™ 細川金星 (razius) pulled off his helm and set it to the side. He then watched as Helga gave her surly northern reply, “And I was so bloody charming as well.” came his own deluded reply. “I could have stuck a knife in the center of the table and demanded it….but no….I guess I am no longer dangerous enough to warrant black wine.”

[13:52:56] KeDjA (lilli.breda) tried to block out and ignore his touch as his hands loosened the bandage. Her eyes looked past him, as if that would help her avoid being haunted by memories. She was clearly struggling to stay calm. The innkeeper’s assistant brought a small bowl of water and a few fresh bandages, which were, of course, readily available here. Namika, after all, had often been out in the woods herself after dark, and the blacksmith… well, when he saw a pretty woman, he was prone to dropping his hammer on his toe. She grumbled softly when she was told she’d survived and muttered, “Thanks be to Odin.” She tried to ignore the woman’s warnings just as much as she did Crow’s touch. She’d better focus on other things. Like the scroll: “I don’t know what’s in it. The seal is the mark of a scribe. From Kassau”—that was all the information she had. Vesper’s words, however, brought a brief smile to her lips and caused her anger to dissipate—an anger that, admittedly, had been simmering only slightly within her.

[13:56:26] Crow (melchior.wardell) started to clean the wound with care and focus. He heard Helga and perked up. “Helga, I am not sure what the Innkeeper told you. But it might be wise to keep a different tone with men like us. ” he casually warned. The words he seemed to drift in the air and already held on to some kind of devilish promise. As he continued to clean he would study the bond as to see if she was in pain and to ensure the wound didn’t show any abnormalities that needed more attention. “Will you talk to Ori when he shows himself and let him see this just to be certain.” he knew the clansman skilled in his craft.

[14:01:18] Helga: looks at Vesper first, snorting loudly at his comment about the knife. “Dangerous? You think sticking a piece of iron in my table makes you dangerous, southron?” she rumbles, her voice carrying easily over the chatter of the inn. “I’ve broken the noses of men twice your size for scratching my wood. If you want black wine, earn a black eye first. At least you made the girl smile—Odin knows she looks like she’s already halfway to Valhalla.” Her amusement vanishes instantly as she shifts her gaze to Crow. Her jaw sets, and those piercing northern eyes narrow into hard chips of ice at his ‘casual warning.’ She steps back toward the table, her looming presence casting a long shadow over his medic work. “A different tone?” Helga scoffs, leaning down slightly so Crow can smell the stale ale and hearth-smoke on her breath. “Listen to me, boy. I don’t care if you carry a devil’s promise in your pocket or a horde at your back. In this inn, under this roof, you’re just another bleeding mouth taking up space. You want to threaten me? Do it when you’re not begging for my clean linen to keep your bond from leaking all over my floor.” She straightens up, letting out a sharp, dismissive breath, though her eyes linger on Kedja’s wound for a second with genuine, grim concern. he glares pointedly at Crow, then at Vesper. “…keep your knives in your sheaths and your tongues behind your teeth. I’ll get your bread and black wine.”With a final, heavy snort, she turns her back on them, completely unfazed, and thuds off toward the kitchen.

[14:04:49] Hosokawa Kinsei – Vesper™ 細川金星 (razius) had thought often on the promise of Ori to stabilize his personalities into some cohesive amalgamation and the words of Crow on the man brought that to the fore. He would turn to Crow and say, “Do you trust Ori to attend to matters of the mind….not just the body?” he inquired of the Killer. But as Helga returned and gave them both a fierce tongue lashing he just looked at her, then looked at Crow, and then at the backside of Helga before saying, “Since Randy is taking a poll, should we send her reply to him by messenger?” It was stated with dry wit and little fanfare.

[14:06:28] KeDjA (lilli.breda) blinks slightly as Crow begins to lecture Helga. Even now, when it doesn’t concern her, his tone triggers that knot in her stomach. The northern woman, however, isn’t intimidated and makes Kedja chuckle briefly. “Oh, that sounds just like home,” she murmurs, trying to pull her leg back a bit before Crow has finished speaking. “It’s fine, Master,” she says quietly, as if she’s uncomfortable with him looking out for her. When he brings Ori into the conversation, she lifts her head and looks at him almost pleadingly. “Oh, do I have to?”

[14:12:14] Crow (melchior.wardell) was for a moment totally flabberghasted by the reply of the woman. Surely if she was by her right mind she would have taken heed of her words. He would let go of Kedja’s knee slowly as he would reach for his dagger slowly. The motion itself seemed to be considered and thoughtful. If one knew what he was capable off that would be a warning enough. He never drew steel unless it truly was meant to speak volumes when words hardly mattered. He could smell the alcohol on her breath as his eyes narrow. Before she was able to head to the kitchen, He called her back. His voice this slithering serpent – a serious warning to watch her tongue. “Your words might be designed to intimidate. But they do not.” he spoke dead serious and every word was given enough air with that natural dominance and authority. “You apoligize right now and do as told. And never dare to speak to me in this manner again.” the dagger glinted in the light of the Inn. He would strike if she dared to come up with another insult.

[14:17:10] Helga: stops dead in her tracks. She doesn’t flinch. She doesn’t gasp. Slow as a glacier, she turns her massive frame back around. Her eyes look down at the glinting steel in Crow’s hand, then slowly drift up to meet his gaze, dead-on. The casual, surly attitude vanishes, replaced by the terrifying, cold stillness of a northern winter. For a woman who handles rowdy blacksmiths, drunk mercenaries, and the constant threat of the woods, a drawn knife isn’t a surprise—it’s a declaration. She leans forward, bringing her chest almost within an inch of the dagger’s point, utterly daring him to drive it home. “Apologize?” she whispers, her voice no longer a rumble, but a low, dangerous hiss that carries an terrifying amount of weight. “To a boy playing with a toothpick in a house that isn’t his?” She slowly lifts her right hand—the one not holding the tray—and reveals a thick, iron-headed meat cleaver tucked into the heavy leather apron at her waist. She doesn’t draw it, but her hand rests on the handle with practiced ease. “You listen to me, ‘master’,” she says, spitting the title like a curse, her eyes locked onto Crow’s with absolute defiance. “You think that little blade makes you a king? I’ve seen men like you bleed out in the dirt over a bowl of cold turnip soup. You come into my town, begging for my help for your broken girl, and you think you can order me around like a dog under your table?” She glares at the dagger, then looks Crow dead in the eye, her jaw rigid. She doesn’t back down an inch. She stands there, a towering wall of northern iron, waiting to see if he’s actually going to use the steel he drew.

[14:20:40] Hosokawa Kinsei – Vesper™ 細川金星 (razius) watched Crow pull out the blade and his eyes did not flash, nor react. It was as if he had expected that reaction from the Caste Master all along. Nor did his eyes find surprise at the revelation of a meat cleaver. He’d seen many a northern woman like this in his travels and this was when the Killer was at his most deadly, Although his hand moved toward his many quiva on his thigh, his voice never moved above a whisper, “Helga, will you marry me in the Spring….if you live through the night that is.”

[14:21:08] KeDjA (lilli.breda) tenses up immediately as Crow draws the dagger and picks up the used bandage. She now deliberately avoids his gaze as he focuses on Helga. She doesn’t want to see it—and above all, she doesn’t want to hear it. That energetic, calm, yet cold voice would normally make her throw herself at his feet. She casts a pleading glance at Vesper, knowing full well that he won’t intervene. But it’s worth a try. Her voice is soft as she tells him, “I’m going to check again to see if the innkeeper is finally here, Master.” With those words, she hurries out of the dining room and disappears

[14:28:28] Crow (melchior.wardell) was not a fool. He never underestimated women. Even now he had reasoned and calculated the odds. Just as his captain he warned only once. He knew the law and knew that within the Inn there was only the matter of steel. As she presented herself closer to his knife he simply struck. Cold as ice without any reservation. Plunging the knife right there were it would give her a reasonable quick end if he had aimed correctly. He was an assassin and a master in his craft. He did not make empty promises and did not feel that the comparison she had thrown in his face were reasonable or to be true. There was perhaps also this other reason to ensure that those in the proximity of the Inn learned soon and quick that when it came to who reigned it was steel and their gold. He didn’t speak to her. Nor did he wish to be King of the castle. He wished to be met with respect and understanding of what they could bring. With deadly precision he would attempt to end what he had begun. The cleaver was noted and his pose had moved in such a manner that the area she could struck if she managed was very little or to not much harm. “We never repeat ourselves, Captain.” he stated.

[14:32:47] Helga: ‘s massive frame and her momentum leaning forward, Crow’s calculated thrust finds its mark, forcing a wet, strangled gasp from her lungs. The wooden tray slips from her grip, clattering loudly to the floorboards as bread rolls and a pitcher clatter across the wood. But Helga is a daughter of the north, built of sterner stuff than the soft targets of the south. As the cold steel drives into her, her survival instinct overrides everything. She doesn’t drop instantly. With a roar of pure, feral agony and rage, her hand pulls the heavy meat cleaver from her apron. She can’t manage a full, clean swing because of how Crow smartly shifted his posture to minimize his profile, but she throws the sheer weight of her failing body and the iron cleaver forward in a desperate, spiteful counter-attack. Her voice is a ragged, wet wheeze, blood bubbling at the corner of her mouth as she glares at Crow through a haze of sudden, blinding pain. She completely ignores Vesper’s morbid marriage proposal, her entire universe narrowing down to the man who just murdered her. “Curse… you… southron… toad…” she chokes out, the words thick and wet. With her remaining strength, she drives the meat cleaver downward toward Crow’s shifted stance—aiming not for a elegant kill, but simply trying to take whatever piece of him she can reach, whether it’s a shoulder, a thigh, or an arm, wishing to drag him down to the grave with her. “Odin… take… you…” Her legs give out. The sheer weight of her body pulls her off Crow’s embedded dagger, and she crashes heavily against the edge of the wooden table, splintering the bench before hitting the floorboards in a massive, heaving heap. Blood pools rapidly around her leather apron. She twitches once, her fingers loosening their grip on the cleaver, her fierce northern eyes finally glassing over under the dim light of the inn. The common room goes dead, horrifyingly silent, save for the sound of her blood dripping through the cracks in the floorboards.

[14:45:14] Hosokawa Kinsei – Vesper™ 細川金星 (razius) watched what occurred with a quick detachment of emotions. The words he uttered of the Spring proposal having the designed intent…to distract just that slight amount to create confusion so that the Caste Master could make his kill. He knew without a doubt what would happen the ihn that Crow drew his weapon. The woman was foolish enough to test it. He’d been at the man’s side far too long to even question what happened after that Killer drew steel…the apology would happen or it would be used. His quiva was drawn as he stood and he moved swiftly to the back of the woman’s body. There would be no doubt of her recovery. The quiva was plunged swiftly into the medulla oblongata, the core regulator of vascular circulation and respiration. He twisted the blade at a 45 degree angle and then moved upward and to the right so that the entire region was severed and rendered completely inviable to life. He pulled the quiva out and then cleaned both sides of the blades swiftly by making what resembled a dagger pattern in blood on her back just below the cut made. “Yes, that is correct, we do not repeat ourselves twice. There is black wine in the camp….shall we?”

[14:50:53] Crow (melchior.wardell) had calculated her counter attack. He had not been foolish nor stupid to see that she a firm woman could bring him out of balance if she used her body. The actions of Vesper helping him so the cleaver would only scrape over his thigh. The impact one that he had endured far worse before. There was not a word uttered. A warning of the stain of blood upon the floor. “Let some of the lads (NPC) clean this up.” he stated to his captain. There was a moment of reflection as he looked to his right hand. The woman was not paid for, but he was not a man that would simply take all things upon his chin. Not where the rules of such were grey and only truly measured by steel.

[14:52:28] Helga: ’s life already spent, the sudden, brutal efficiency of Vesper’s quiva ensures there is not even a final, lingering twitch from the massive northern woman. The clinical precision of the strike to her brainstem severs the last remaining threads of her fierce spirit, leaving her body entirely still on the blood-soaked floorboards. The heavy silence of the inn returns, thick with the sharp tang of copper and the smell of spilled ale. Helga lies motionless, a tragic monument to the harsh reality of the frontier, where pride and iron rules are swiftly crushed by the calculated lethality of the Caste. Her final, unuttered response is written only in the dead stare of her glassed-over eyes, reflecting the dim hearth fire, and the steady, dark pool of blood expanding across the tavern floor. She will give no more warnings about the woods, and she will fetch no more bread. With the deed done and the threat neutralized, the path is clear for Crow and Vesper to leave the mess to the Inns underlings and retreat to the safety of their camp, where the black wine awaits.
